Effect of Water Stress on Morphological Attributes and Yield of Tomato Genotypes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh, during October 2007 to January 2008 to investigate the effect of different soil moisture levels on morphological attributes and yield of eight tomato genotypes viz., D₆-102, D₆-120, D₆-123, BARl tomato-7, BARl tomato-5, TM-110, CLN-2418 and CLN-2413 to identify water stress tolerant genotype (s). The soil moisture levels of 70, 50 and 30% FC were imposed at 25 days after sowing. The experiment was laid out following randomized complete block design with three replications. Results revealed that the effect of different levels of water stress was significant for plant height, branch number, number of fruits plant^-1, single fruit weight and fruit yield plant^-1 but the number of flower and fruit bearing clusters plant^-1 were not affected by the soil moisture levels. The highest value of the most parameters was observed in 70% FC followed by 50 and 30% FC which resulted in the highest fruit yield in 70% FC and the lowest in 30% FC. BARl tomato-7 and BARl tomato-5 were found more suitable under water stress.

Objectives:

The objective of the study was to identify water stress tolerant tomato genotype.

Methodology:

A pot experiment was carried out under three levels of soil moisture levels viz, 70, 50 and 30% field capacity (FC) with eight tomato genotypes viz., D₆-102, D₆-120, D₆-123, BARl tomato-7, BARl tomato-5, TM-110, CLN-2418 and CLN-2413 at the pot yard of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, during October 2007 to January 2008. The soil moisture levels were imposed at 25 days after sowing. The experiment was laid out following randomized complete block design with three replications. A total of 72 PVC pots were prepared with 12 kg of soils. Seeds were sown on 7 September, 2007 and seedlings were transplanted in the experimental pots in the afternoon of 3 October, 2007. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Cow dung, Urea, TSP and MP of 110, 3.00, 2.58, 1.80 and 110 g pot^-1 corresponding to 10 t ha^-1, 280, 250 and 180 kg ha^-1, respectively were applied. Half the doses of urea, full dose of TSP and MP were mixed with the soil. Rest of urea was applied in the soils with two splits at branching and early flowering stages. Uniform care and intercultural operation were done. Observations were made on the morphological, yield attributes and yield of tomato plant. All collected data were statistically analyzed and the means were compared with Duncan's Multiple Range Test at 5 level of significance.
