A fertilizer and weeding experiment of T. aman rice was conducted at On Farm Research Division, Agricultural Research Station, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Rangpur where included five doses of fertilizers viz. i) Dose for BRRI recommended 100-10-30-6-2, ii) Dose for Moderate yield goal 65-6-28-9-2, iii) Dose for High yield goal 90-7-36-12-3, iv) Farmer's practice 97-15-25-0-0 kg N-P-K-S- Zn ha' and v) absolute control dose (no fertilizer) and weeding treatment such as four weeding treatment i) no weeding (W1) ii) farmer's practice (W2) (one weeding after 20 Days After Transplant = DAT), iii) BRRI recommended (W4) (Two weeding after 20 and 40 DAT) iv) Weed free (W3) (as required/mainly three times after 20, 35-40 and 55-60 DAT) were as treatment. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with three replications with doses of fertilizers in the main plot and weeding in the sup plot. Results revealed that doses of fertilizers significantly influenced yield-contributing characters except 1000-grain weight. The fertilizer dose for high yield goal and BRRI recommended dose maximum produced highest grain yields, which were similar. Weed free condition was the best to get the highest grain yield and BRRI recommended practice to keep the crop weed free up to 40 days after transplanting was the next highest which gave significantly lower grain yield than weed free condition. Different weed species belonging to four families were found to infest the crops. Among those, Durba was the most dominant weed, which was followed by Bishkataly, Khudeyshama, Angata and loina. Results of the present study suggest that the fertilizer dose for high yield goal (90-7-36-12-3 kg N-P-K-S-Zn ha-1) and the dose for recommended by BRRI (100-10-30-6-2 kg N-P-K-S-Zn ha-1) together with weed free condition should be practiced for securing the highest grain yield T. aman rice cv. BRRI dhan 32 in Rangpur Sadar region.

i) To find out the most suitable fertilizer dose for T.aman rice cv. BRRI dhan 32 in Sadra Upazila of Rangpur;

ii) To find out the best weeding treatment for T.aman rice;

iii) To find out the effect of interaction between doses of fertilizers and weeding on the yield of T.aman rice cv. BRRI dhan 32.

The experiment was conducted at the On Farm Research Division, Agricultural Research Station, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Rangpur, during the period from June to December 2004 to study the effect of fertilizer and weeding on the yield and yield contributing characters of T.aman rice.The experimental site belongs to the Tista Mender flood plain Agro-Ecological Zone. The experiment was laid out in a split plot design having three replications. The unit plot size was 2.7 m x 4 m. and maintaining spacing 20 cm x 15 cm. Fertilizer used in main plot and weeding treatment used at sub-plot, which were placed randomly. There are five fertilizer doses fertilizer dose viz. i) T1= BRRI recommended: 100-10-30-6-2 kg ii) T2 = MYG (Moderate Yield Goal): 65-6-28-9-2 kg, iii) T3= HYG (High Yield Goal) : 90-7-36-12-3 kg, iv) T4=Farmers Practice: 97-15-25-0-0 kg, iv) and v) T5=Absolute control: 0-0-0-0-0 kg N - P - k - S - Zn ha-1. The dose for Moderate and High yield goal were based on Soil test basis. All phosphorus, potassium, sulphur and zinc fertilizers were applied as broadcast and incorporated with soil before transplanting. For nitrogen fertilizer was applied in the main plots for treatment T1 and T2 in three equal splits. The first one third was applied after seedling establishment, second one third at the rapid tillering stage and last dose at 5-7 days before panicle initiation. For (Farmers practices (T3) treatment only one time as top dress just 20 DAT. For BRRI recommended (T4) treatment it was used as top-dress 20 and 40 DAT. and four weeding treatment viz. i) No weeding (W1): Weeds were allowed to grow without intervention up to harvest, ii) Farmers practice (W2): One weeding after 20 to 25 days of transplanting- Weeds were uprooted by hand. There after no other weeding operation was done up to harvest. iii) BRRI recommended: Two weeding after 20 and 40 days of transplanting. iv) Weed free (W3): Three weeding after 20,30-35, and 55-60 days of transplanting-Weeds were uprooted by hand after transplanting. There after no other weeding operation was done up to harvest. No other weeding operation was done up to harvest. After 35 days of sowing the seedlings were uprooted from the seedbed plot carefully without causing any injury to the roots and transplanted on the puddled unit plots on 29 July 2004. The experimental plots were irrigated as and when necessary and excess water was drained out at the of heavy rainfall. Five hills were selected randomly from each unit plot excluding border rows to record the data on plant height, effective tillers hill-1, number of grains panicle-1 and 1000-grain weight. On attaining maturity, the crops were harvested on 11 November 2004. The grain yield was adjusted to 14 per cent moisture content. Straws were similarly sun dried and weighed to record the straw yield. Grain yields are finally expressed as t ha-1. The data on weed infestation were taken from unit plots at flowering. The weed infestation in each plot was identified species-wise and their density m-2 was counted. The density of weeds was determined by using an iron frame or quadrate of 0.5 m x 0.5 m in three places at random in each plot. The average number of three samples was converted to number m-2 by multiplying by 4.Weed population was the sum of all weeds, which were collected. It was converted to number m-2 . The sample plants were uprooted prior to harvest and then sun dried. Data on the yield and yield related characters were recorded and analyzed, using the "Analysis of variance" technique with the help of computer package MSTAT. Duncan Multiple Range Test adjudged the mean differences.
