Role of Morpho-physiological Attributes on Yield in Soybean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted to investigate growth, morpho-physiological characters, yield attributes and seed yield in four soybean advanced mutants viz., SBM-13, SBM-17, SBM-20 and SBM-22 along with a newly released variety, BINAsoybean-1. Results revealed that plant height, branch number, leaf area (LA), total dry mass (TDM), leaf area index (LAI), absolute growth rate (AGR) and relative growth rate (RGR) differed significantly at all growth stages. TDM, LA and LAI increased with age till 80 DAS. The AGR increased till 80 days after sowing (DAS) followed by a decline due to slow dry matter accumulation at later growth stages. The mutant SBM-20 showed superiority in respect of plant height; branch, TDM, LA and growth parameters like LAI, AGR and RGR at most of the growth stages and also produced the highest seed yield whilst BINAsoybean-1 showed the inferiority in case of plant height, branch number, LA, LAI and AGR and resulted lower seed yield. However, in general, superior dry matter partitioning to economic yield was observed in low yield yielding genotypes than the high yielding ones. Among the studied mutants/variety, SBM-20 may be released as variety after few more trials in the different agro-ecological zones of Bangladesh.

Objectives:

To evaluate the growth and development of four elite soybean genotypes compared to the variety Binasoybean-1; and to select better genotype in respect to growth, yield and yield components.

Methodology:

Five soybean genotypes (SBM-13, SBM-17, SBM-20, SBM-22 and Binasoybean-1) were used as treatment in the experiment and the experiment was conducted at the Research Farm, Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with 3 replications. The size of the unit plot was 3 m x 4 m. Urea, triple super phosphate (TSP), muriate of potash (MP) and gypsum were used as source of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and sulphur @ 40, 120, 80 and 40 kg ha^-1, respectively. Total amount of Urea, TSP, MP and gypsum were applied at basal doses during final land preparation. Different intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. To study ontogenetic growth characteristics, a total of six harvests were made and at final harvest, data were collected on some morpho-physiological parameters, yield attributes and yield. The first crop sampling was done at 35 DAS and continued at an interval of 15 days up to 110 DAS i.e. till attaining physiological maturity. From each sampling, five plants were randomly selected from each plot and uprooted for collecting necessary parameters. The plants were separated into leaves, stems and roots and the corresponding dry weight were recorded after oven drying at 80 ± 2 0C for 72 hours. The leaf area of each sample was measured by LICOR automatic leaf area meter (Model: LICOR 3000). The growth analyses like AGR and RGR were carried out following the formulae of Hunt (1978). At harvest, morphological, yield attributes were recorded from 10 plants of each plot. The plot yield converted into kg/ha. The collected data were analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

High yielding genotypes have taller plant, higher number of branches, LA as well as LAI, TDM and AGR which resulted higher number of pods plant^-1 than the low yielders in soybean; and among the genotypes, SBM-20 produced the highest seed yield due to superiority of yield attributes than in the others.
