Field experiments were conducted during 1 994-95 to 1996-97 on a silt-loam soil at lshwardi , Bangladesh to study the impact of various irrigation levels on the yield of some advanced mutants of lentil. In a split-plot design, irrigation was applied in main-plots and cultivars in sub-plots. Four irrigation treatments were followed in this experiment, viz. control (no irrigation). one common irrigation was applied after 20 to 25 days of sowing plus later irrigation in the last two treatments was given following IW/CPE ratios of 0.4 and 0.75. henceforth referred to as T0, T1, T2 and T3. respectively. The results showed that irrigation had significantly negative effect on the yield of lentil in all the experimental years. The highest yield and water use efficiency was recorded without irrigation and they gradually decreased with the increase of the irrigation amount. Thus, the experimental results revealed that for lentil cultivation in the study area, stored soil moisture with the prevailing rainfall is sufficient to produce its optimum yield and application of irrigation seems to be harm ul to the crop.

To investigate the influence of the adequacy or lack of water on the yield and water use efficiency of a few lentil mutants newly developed at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA).

Field experiments were conducted during the winter seasons (Nov to Feb) of 1994-95, 1995-96 and 1996-97 at Ishwardi, a pulse growing area. Texturally the soil is silt-loam. The bulk density of 0 to 120 cm experimental soil profile ranged from 1.52 gm.cm-3 to 1.63 gm.cm-3. Some other physio-chemical properties of the soil. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design having the sizes of unit main- plots 5 x 8 m and sub plots 5 x 2 m, applying irrigation in main plots and cultivars in sub-plots. The individual main-plots were bounded by 0.4 m wide levees constructed beforehand to hold the irrigation water. Besides this, additional 0.5 m space was left in between the levees as a buffer zone. A small space was also provided in between two sub-plots and the experiment was replicated thrice. The irrigation treatments were as follows: T0 = control (no irrigation ) T1 = irrigation after 20 to 25 days of sowing T2 = irrigation as in T1 and later irrigation was followed at IW/CPE = 0.4 T3 =irrigation as in T 1 and later irrigation was followed at IW/CPE = 0.75 where IW refers to the initial irrigation depth/water applied to the irrigated plots based on field capacity of soil and CPE is the cumulative open pan evaporation minus rainfall since the previous irrigation. Three lentil mutants and one variety of lentil were in the sub-plots as follows: VI= ML-20, V2 = ML-22, V3 = ML-432,  V4 = Utfala (as check).  In each year. seeds of lentil were sown in lines in between Ist and 2nd week of November providing a row spacing of 30 cm. During the vegetative stage and at time of weeding. a uniform plant population was maintained keeping 6 to 8 cm plant to plant spacing. In each irrigated plot one aluminium access tube was installed to a depth of 120 cm prior to sowing. Then soil moisture was monitored at sowing. before and after 24 hours of each irrigation and finally at harvest with a neutron moisture meter at an increment of 15 cm up to 120 cm soil depth. Soil moisture content of the top 15 cm was determined gravimetrically.

Considering all the above facts it is, however, revealed that the studied lentil mutants/variety can produce their potential yield under sufficient preserved soil moisture condition with little or no rainfall, and supplemental Irrigation may greatly damage the crop with markedly reduced yield.
