Evaluation of Jack Fruit Germplasm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Eighteen superior jack fruit were collected and planted in the Fruit Research Farm of HRC, BARI, Gazipur during 2001. The plant and fruit characteristics of collected jack fruit germplasm were studied during the fruiting season from 2007 to 2013. The results indicated that wide range of diversity existed in plant height, canopy architecture and number of fruits per plant. Plant characteristics of the jack fruit germplasm under the study varied to a large extent among themselves. Fruit characteristics of jack fruit germplasm also varied largely. Number of fruits per plant ranging from 2.5-33 per plant. The fruit weight ranged from 3.3 to 9.7 kg and AH Joy-092 produced the heaviest fruit. Number of bulb per fruit varied from 71 to 170 and AH Joy-078 contained maximum bulb. TSS was found to vary from 15 to 25^oBrix and it was found height in AH Joy-086. Considering fruits per plant, single fruit weight, bulb per plant and TSS content the germplasm AH Joy-086 were found to be superior and recommended for releasing a new jack fruit variety.

Methodology:

Eighteen superior jack fruit germplasm were collected from different location of Gazipur through in situ evaluation. Collected jack fruit germplasm were planted in the Fruit Research Farm of HRC, BARI, Gazipur on 01 July, 2001 for ex-situ evaluation. Planting distance was maintained 5.7x 2.8 m. Each jack fruit germplasm were considered as a treatment. During 2007 most of the germplasm produced fruits. Tree and fruit characteristics of jack fruit germplasm were evaluated as per descriptor of jack fruit published by International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI). Different vegetative characters viz. base girth, plant height, number of branches, and canopy spread (North-South and East-West), and fruit characters viz. Fruit weight (kg), rind weight (kg), rachis weight (g), bulb weight (kg), seed weight (g), no of bulb/fruit, fruit length (cm), fruit dia (cm) and TSS were studied. Two year’s data on different attributes were subjected to pooled analysis following simple statistical design using MSTAT-C program and interpreted chronologically.

Achievement/Findings:

A wide range of variation was observed among the studied jack fruit germplasm and most of the germplasm may be used for superior mother plant for hybridization in jack fruit. However, considering fruits per plant, single fruit weight, bulb per plant and TSS content the germplasm AH Joy-086 were found to be superior and recommended for releasing a new jack fruit variety.
