Effect of Drying Temperature and Collection Procedures of Rumen Inoculum on Digestibility in Vitro and Metabolizable Energy Contents of Grasses

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Five samples from each grass were dried in the sun or in an oven at 45°C, 110°C and 120°C. The rumen inoculum from a cannulated animal was collected by hands or by suction pump for fermentation in vitro to determine organic matter digestibility (DOM) and metabolizable energy (ME) contents of the grasses . The DOM and ME contents of the grasses dried in the sun or in an oven at 45°C did not differ significantly (P< 0.05) but oven drying at above 45°C significantly (P<0.05) reduced the nutritive values. The collection of rumen inoculum by suction pumps increased nonsignificantly (P<0.05) the DOM and ME contents of the grasses, compared to that done by hand. Thus for in vitro determination of digestible organic matter and metabolizable energy contents, green forages may be dried in the sun or at 45°C in ovens and may be fermented with the rumen inoculum collected by suction pumps in anaerobic conditions, for optimum fermentation.

Objectives:

To identify a suitable temperature for forage drying and an accurate procedure for collection of rumen inoculum to optimize fermentation in vitro of ruminant feeds, Napier (Pennisetum purpuriuml), Leucaena (Leucaena leucocephala), Pangola (Digitaria decumbens) and Guinea (Panicum maximum) were used as test samples.

Methodology:

Four different types of grasses such as Napier (Pennisetum purpurium ), Leucaena (leucaena Leucocephala ), Pangola ( Digitaria decumbens) and Guinea (Panicum maximum) were collected and five samples from each grass were dried in the sun or in an oven at 45°C, 100°C, 110°C and 120°C. The length of drying period depended on the complete preparation of samples for milling with 40 mesh sieve. The samples were analyzed for chemical components.
