A  study  of  the  effect   of  different levels of  napthalene acetic acid (NAA) and gibberellic acid (GA)   adopting different mmethod  of application on the growth, yield and ascorbic  acid  contents   of a local variety of cabbage  was made. Spraying  the  plants   with 50  ppm each of NAA  and GA at 15 day interval caused higher growth.   Gibberellic acid appeared  to have more potential than NAA.

  Cabbage

To  find  out the effective concentration  of NAA  and GA that  will  promote growth, yield and ascorbic  acid content of cabbage.

In  the present  investigation, cabbage variety  Atlas  70 was  grown during  the winter season  of   1989  in  Horticulture Farm, Bangladesh   Agricultural   University, Mymensingh. The experiment was laid out  in a split-plot design replicated thrice, with   three different methods of application  o f  two growth regulators, ie, seedling   soaked   for 12 hours (S 1),once   spray  at  15  days   (S1)  of  trans-plantation and twice spraying at 15 days   )(G6), 25 ppm (G 6),  5 ppm  (67 ). 100 ppm (G8) of  Gibberellic acid (GA) and distilled water  (G 1) as control  in  the sub-plots.  The  experimental  soil   was silty  loam with  pH   range from 6.8 to7.0.    Twenty  five     days   old  seedlings were  transplanted in five  row   plots  of size 2.4m   X 2.4m  each.    Row   to row and pla'1t to plant   spacing  was  main rained a t 60cm and  60cm  respectively. Ten tons cow dung, 500  kg mustard  oil cake, 375 kg urea,  225 kg   triple  super phosphate and 275 kg muriate of potash per hectare   ware  applied as fertilizers. Cow dung and  triple   super   phosphate were applied before  final land preparation  whereas 50%   urea and muriate of potash  wero  appli&d  after  15 days of transplanting.    The   rest doses of fertilizer s were applied after 15 days of first top  dress.  The  crops   were   harvested after  six months .

The maximum  amount   of   ascorbic acid was found   with the application of twice spray of  growth regulators with GA and  NAA.   It  was statistically  Identical to single spray but  was superior  to seedling soaking treatment. Ascorbic   acid   content  showed an In creasing  trend upto 50  ppm with twice spray while  its  content was   declined afterwards.    It  revealed that  excessive doses   of  growth  r regulators  were   not suitable for  the  accumulation of ascorbic  acid. Fifty ppm   was found  to be  a suitable dose  for  ascorbic  acid  accumulation end such   findings   were    also reported  by many  workers  (Singh  and Seimbhi, 1969 ).Table    3   showed  t hat    GA  treatment   caused  17%  mote  ascorbic  acid while  NAA  showed  14%  more ascorbic acid than the  control.  Growth regulators  increase   the   sugar   concentration  of   plant  . Thus   the   maximum amount   of   ascorbicc  acid   is  derived  from  sugar  via gluconooxldase enzyme activities.Baaed  on  the    discussion    above. it  is  evident  that    twice  spray  with 50   ppm   GA  Is   suitable    dose   both for  higher   yield   and     ascorbic     acid content  of  cabbage.
