Effect of Different Mulching on Growth and Yield in Garlic

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at the field Laboratory of the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during the period from November 1999 to April 2000 to investigate the effect of different mulches on growth, yield attributes and yield of garlic varieties. four different mulches viz., no mulch (control), irrigation, water hyacinth and rice straw and one variety, Multiclove local. Results revealed that growth, yield attributes and yield were greater in mulch and irrigation plot than control plot. The highest plant parameters and yield attributes and yield both per plant and hectare (13.53 g plant^-1 and 7.28 t ha^-1) was recorded in water hyacinth mulch. However, the influence of irrigation and rice straw on above studied parameters was similar. The lowest above studied parameters was recorded in control plot resulting the lowest bulb yield performance (9.69 g plant^-1 and 5.07 t ha^-1).

Objectives:

To investigate the effect of different mulching on growth, yield attributes and yield of garlic.

Methodology:

A field experiment was conducted at the field Laboratory of the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Rangpur, during the period from November 1999 to April 2000 to investigate the effect of planting date on growth, yield attributes and yield of garlic varieties. The experiment consisted of two factors: four different mulches viz., no mulch (control), irrigation, water hyacinth and rice straw and one variety, Multiclove local. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. Unit plot size was 3 m x 2.5 m and plant spacing was 15 cm for line to line distance and plant to plant distance. Recommended fertilizer doses were applied. The treatments were imposed 30 days after planting. Data on plant characters were recorded from the five randomly selected plants of each replication. The collected data were analyzed statistically and means were adjudged by DMRT at 5% level of probability.

Achievement/Findings:

Among the mulches and irrigation, water hyacinth performed the best in respect of growth, yield attributes and yield in garlic. So, we may practice water hyacinth mulch for increased garlic yield.
