Productivity of Br Varieties as Transplanted and Direct Seeded Late Aman Crop Under Rainfed Conditions

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Direct seeding of sprouted rice seed in puddled field was tested as an alternative to the conventional seedling raising-transplanting method as late Aman rice cultivation in the rainfed lowland ecosystem in a field with five MV rices, BRI, BR3, BR4, BR14 and BR22. Two methods, TP and direct wet-seeding, i.e. broadcasting of sprouted seeds in puddled soil (BS) were tried. Direct seeding method was. found superior over transplanting in terms of grain yield. Under BS method, BR14 and BR22 produced significantly higher yields (5.23 t/ha and 5.14 t/ha) respectively, than the other MV tested. Under TP method BR22 yielded significantly higher grain (3.75 t/ha) which was followed by BR1 (3.09t/ha). However, BR3 and BR4 failed to flower in this method.

Objectives:

An experiment was undertaken to study the feasibility of the direct seeding technique in Aman rice production.

Methodology:

A field experiment was conducted in the Aman season of 1991 at the experimental farm of the BRRI regional station, Camilla. The soil of the experimental field was silty clay loam in texture with pH 5.2,0.9% organic C, CEC 13.1me/100g, total N 0.09%, C/N ratio 10, exchangeable K 0.17 me/100g, and available P (Olsen P) 32 ppm. The test varieties were BR1, BR3, BR4, BR14, and BR22 with different agronomic traits . Two methods, transplanting (TP) and direct wet-seeding, i.e., broadcasting sprouted seeds in puddled soil, were tried. Under the BS method, sprouted seeds were directly broadcasted in the main puddled field on August 15, 1991. For TP, sprouted seeds were also sown in the seedbed on August 15, 1991 for seedling raising, and transplanting was done in the main field on Sept. 15, 1991. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design and each treatment (method x variety) was replicated three times. The unit plot size was 5m x 3m. The experimental field was well prepared and leveled. Nitrogen, P and K fertilizers were applied at the rates of 80, 60, 40 kg/ha in the form of urea, TSP and MP, respectively. All fertilizer except N were applied during final land preparation. Nitrogen was applied in 3 equal splits, 10 days after direct seeding or transplanting, at the maximum tillering stage and at the panicle initiation stage. Intercultural operations and plant protection measures were taken as and when required. The crop was harvested at physiological maturity. Grain yield and other agro-economic data were recorded from a sampling area of 5m² from each unit plot. All data were statistically analyzed following a standard procedures for comparison of means.

Achievement/Findings:

The varieties BR 1, BR 14 and BR22 in the BS method matured, respectively, 26,21 and 2 days earlier than in the TP method. This could be due to the absence of .transplanting shock and other physiological characteristics associated with the varieties. BR3 and BR4 matured in 124 and 135 days, respectively, in the BS method but they failed to flower in the TP culture. From the above observations it is obvious that even in late Aman, MV Aman rice cultivation in the direct wet seeding method would facilitate an early release of land, for post-Aman crops. Moreover, the early harvest could save farmers' crops from such unpredictable natural hazards as cyclonic storms, drought and insect attack which after occur at the fag end of the Aman season.
