Interest of Rural Youth in Selected Agricultural Activities

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This article attempts to determine the interest of male rural youth between the age category of 15-25 years in selected agricultural activities and to explore the relationships between the 12 selected characteristics of rural youth and the 5 selected agricultural activities. Data were collected from 137 rural youth from 3 selected villages of Mymensingh district during December 1992 to March 1993. The interest index was developed to measure the interest of rural youth. The Interest indices of 5 selected agricultural activities ranged from 109 to 159 and indicated that: (i) improved field crop cultivation including ploughing, fertilizer application, pesticide use and irrigation (159), (ii) rearing of poultry, goat and cattle (157) and (iii) improved winter vegetable and horticultural crop cultivation around homestead (154) were the top 3 activities in rank order.The indices of the remaining 3 activities exceeded 100. The overall interest of rural youth revealed that over three-fourths (78%) had medium interest, one-fifth low, 1% high and 1% no interest. Correlation analysis revealed that agricultural knowledge and attitude towards technology were positively related and leadership negatively related with the interest of rural youth in selected agricultural activities. Stepwise multiple regression analysis further revealed that the 12 independent variables in combination contributed 22% of the total variance in which agricultural knowledge alone had 11% contribution while leadership and attitude towards technology had contributions to some extent.

Objectives:

i). to determine the selected characteristics of rural youth; ii. to determine the selected characteristics of rural youth in selected agricultural ac.tivities; and iii. to explore relationships between the characteristics of rural youth and their extent of interest in agricultural activities and to determine the contribution of various factors.

Methodology:

Study Area, Population and Sampling: Three villages of Mymensingh district, namely, Kakonhati (lswarganj Thana), Kazirshimla (Trishal Thana) and Rangchapra (Bhaluka Thana) were the locale of this research. Out of 391 rural youth families, 137 were selected by proportionate random method and then one male youth aged 1 5-25 years was selected at random from each selected family to constitute the sample for this study i.e. 137 rural youth. Data were collected during December 1992 to March 1993 through interview schedule. The 12 selected characteristics of rural youth namely, age, education, agricultural knowledge, leadership, cosmopoliteness, socio-economic status of the family, farm size of the family, family income, earning status, aspiration in life, ability to cope with uncertainty and attitude towards technology were the independent variables of this study Most of these variables were measured by developing scales and the rest were measured on the basis of raw scores. The interest of rural youth in selected agricultural activities was the dependent variable of this study. The following 5 selected agricultural activities were included to measure the interest of rural youth.

Achievement/Findings:

The findings and discussion as presented above indicate that non-formal educational programmes should be available to the rural youth to utilize their interest in agricultural activities. The interest would increase if they are provided with improved technology. Further rural youth should be trained in improved knowledge and skills which would enable them to develop vocation and self-employment. Extension agencies would, therefore, need to undertake programmes and emphasis innovative practices of crop, horticulture, livestock and fisheries for the youth. This is very important to make the future rural youth programme effective and attractive for the rural of Bangladesh.
