Studies on the Prevention and Control of Nematodes in Indigenous Chickens

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted to find out the efficacy of Levamisole and parbendazole which may be accepted for the control of ascariasis under the existing condition in Bangladesh. Levamisole at the dose rate of 40 mg/kg body weight was found to be 100 percent effective against Ascarida galli and Hetarakis gallinarum in both artificial and natural infection. Parbendazole at the dose rate of 26 mg/kg body weight was found to be 80 percent effective against A. galli and H, gallinarum in artificial infection.

Objectives:

To finding out a suitable drug for the control for ascariasis in fowl and also to investigate the efficacy therapy in experimental birds.

Methodology:

One hundred (100) birds were purchased from the local market and grouped in 5 (five) each consisting of twenty birds. All the birds were treated for actoparasites and for cestodes with appropriate insecticide and anthelmintic respectively to keep the experimental birds free from other parasitic effects which were not related to the experiment. Three groups of fowls were experimentally infected with 200 infective eggs of Ascaridia galli and Heterakis gallinae. Birds of group 'A' were treated with Levamisole (Teramisol) at the dose rate of 40 mg/kg body weight. Birds of group 'B' were treated with parbendazole at the dose rate of 25 mg/kg body weight. Birds of group 'C' were kept as control. Treatment to birds of both 'A' & 'B' were given two months after the infection when the parasites were expected to become matured. Birds of three groups were autopsied 10 days after treatment and the parasites were collected, identified and counted. Remaining two groups of birds were kept under natural condition for infection. Of this two groups of birds one group was treated with Levamisole at the dose of 40 mg/kg body and the other group was kept as control. They were also autopsised 10 days after treatment. The parasites were recovered, identified and counted. Birds of all five groups were autopsised to recorded the effects of the drugs in both experimentally and naturally infected birds. Number of nematode parasites recovered from both treated and control groups were counted and recorded. Gross pathological changes along with other symptomatic changes of both treated and control groups were also recorded.
