Effect of Foliar Application of Nitrogen and Micronutrients on Growth and Yield in Mungbean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Nitrogen (N) in the form of urea (1.5% w/v) was prayed on canopy of pot grown plants either alone or with micronutrients (0.1% w/v of B, Mo, Zn, Ca and Fe) at reproductive stage to investigate their effect on morphological, growth and yield attributes in two mungbean genotypes, one bold (MB-16) and another small seeded (MB-35). Foliar application of N or N plus micronutrients increased leaf area, specific leaf weight, chlorophyll content, total dry mass, flower number and reproductive efficiency, yield attributes and yield over the control treatment where no foliar N or N plus micronutrients was applied. This increment appeared the highest in N plus micronutrients treatment although did not differ from the foliar application of only N. Foliar application of N and N plus micronutrients had no significant influenced on harvest index and grain protein content but had significant influence on yield attributes and yield. The effects were much pronounced in bold seeded genotype, MB-16 compared to small seeded genotype, MB-35. Results suggest that foliar application of N and micronutrients at reproductive stage appears effective in improving mungbean seed yield.

Objectives:

To investigate whether exogenous supply of nitrogen, in the form of urea and urea plus micronutrients, during flowering and pod redevelopment stages would increase seed yield of mungbean.

Methodology:

Two pot experiments were carried out at the pot-yard of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh, Bangladesh during February to May 2007 and 2008. Both the experiments comprised of three levels of nutrients foliar application at flowering start to pod development stages, were: i) Control, where no foliar application of nutrient; ii) Urea four times at the rate of 1.5% at an interval of 4 days; and iii) 1.5% urea plus 0.1% micronutrients of B, Mo, Zn, Ca and Fe four times at an interval of 4 days. Two mungbean genotypes were selected, one was bold seeded (MB-16) and another was small seeded (MB-35). The pots were filled with 12 kg sandy loam soil. The urea, triple superphosphate, muriate of potash and gypsum were applied as basal dose at the rate of 40, 80, 60 and 40 kg ha^-1, respectively. The experiment was laid out in two factors completely randomized design with four replications. Each pot contained two plants and denotes a replication.

Opened flowers were counted daily from first opening of flowers and continued until flowering ceased. Reproductive efficiency was calculated from the ratio of the number of pods at maturity and the total number of opened flowers, multiplied by 100. Chlorophyll was determined from flowering start to physiological maturity at 2 and 4 days intervals for 2007 and 2008, respectively from the top second leaves following the method of Yoshida et al. (1976). Grain protein content was estimated from the second experiment only by micro-Kjeldhal method. Leaf area, specific leaf weight, total dry mass (roots + stem + leaves) and yield attributes were recorded at physiological pod maturity. The collected data were analyzed by CRD factorial design using the statistical computer package programme, MSTAT.

The effects were much pronounced in bold seeded genotype compared to small seeded genotype. Results suggest that foliar application of N and micronutrients at reproductive stage appears effective in improving mungbean seed yield. The farmers of the Indian sub-continent are not habituated to use micronutrients as foliar spray on field crops. Therefore, the farmers may use only N as foliar spray for increased mungbean yield.
