Effect of Time and Rate of Nitrogen Application on Yield and Grain Protein Content in Transplant Aman Rice Cv. BINAdhan-7

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of time and rate of nitrogen application on yield and grain protein content of transplant Aman rice cv. Binadhan-7. The experiment comprised of three times of nitrogen application viz., N applied in three equal splits at (a) final land preparation or 0 DAT, 20 and 45 DAT, (b) 10, 30 and 50 DAT and (c) 20, 40 and 60 DAT, and four nitrogen levels viz., 0, 40, 80 and 120 kg N ha^-1. Plant height, leaf area, number of effective tillers hill^-1, number of filled grains panicle^-1, grain and straw yield decreased with delayed N application. The highest plant height, number of effective tillers hill^-1, grains panicle^-1 and grain yield were observed when N was applied in three equal splits at 0, 20 and 45 DAT followed by three equal splits at 10, 30 and 50 DAT with same statistical rank. In contrast, delayed N application produced the lowest values. The tallest plant, highest leaf area, non-effective tillers hill^-1, unfilled grains panicle^-1, straw yield and grain protein content were observed in the highest dose of N, 120 kg ha^-1 followed by 80 and 40 kg N ha^-1. However, grain protein content in 80 kg N ha^-1 was close to 120 N kg ha^-1. The highest grain yield was recorded in N₄₀ due to production of highest number of effective tillers hill^-1 and grains panicle^-1.

Objectives:

To study the effect of nitrogen levels on growth, yield and grain protein content of transplant Aman rice cv. Binadhan-7;
To find out the effect of time of nitrogen application on growth, yield and grain protein content of T. Aman rice cv. Binadhan-7; and
To find out the appropriate combination of nitrogen level and time of nitrogen application for higher yield and grain protein content of transplant Aman rice cv. Binadhan-7.

Methodology:

Field experiment was conducted at the experimental farm of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh during July to October, 2006. A newly recommended transplant Aman rice variety Binahan-7 was used as the test crop. The experiment comprised of three times of nitrogen application viz., N applied in three equal splits at (a) final land preparation or 0 days after transplanting (DAT), 20 and 45 DAT (T₁), (b) 10, 30 and 50 DAT (T₂) and (c) 20, 40 and 60 DAT (T₃), and four rates of nitrogen viz. 0, 40, 80 and 120 kg N ha^-1. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with three replications where rate and time of nitrogen application were placed in main plot and sub-plot, respectively. The size of a unit plot was 3.0 m ´ 2.5 m. Nitrogen was applied in the form of urea as per treatment. A fertilizer dose of 110-60-34-5 kg ha^-1 of TSP, MP, gypsum and zinc sulphate, respectively, were applied at the time of final land preparation. Urea was applied as per treatments. Twenty five day-old seedlings were transplanted on 2 August 2007 at the rate of 2 seedlings per hill maintaining spacing of 20 cm × 15 cm. Intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Data on plant characters were recorded from ten sample hills except the grain and straw yields which were collected from whole plots. The collected data were analyzed statistically.

Three split application of 40 kg N ha^-1at 0, 20 and 45 DAT appears to be the best for grain yield and dry matter partitioning to economic yield with moderate grain protein content of transplant Aman rice cv Binadhan-7 .
