Effect of Water Stress on Different Growth Stages of Transplanted Aman Rice Genotypes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot experiment with three transplanted aman rice genotypes was carried out at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh during July 5 to December 6, 2003 to assess the effect of water stress on different growth stages and to identify the drought tolerant variety. The experiment was carried out with three aman rice genotypes namely Basmoti, Binadhan-4 and RD-2585 putting them at three different water stresses (100, 70 and 40% FC). Plant height, number of tillers and leaf area hill^-1, number of filled grains panicle^-1, total dry matter hill^-1, 1000-grain weight, grain yield, harvest index (HI) and chlorophyll content in leaves were decreased with the increasing of stress levels. Responses of the genotypes to different water stresses vary differently. There had different degrees of reduction of the yield contributing characters for the stress. Binadha-4 produced more tillers, leaves, total dry matter, chlorophyll content, yield and harvest index under water stress than other two genotypes. Basmoti showed the highest plant height but medium yield, TDM, HI, 1000-grain weight and chlorophyll content. RD-2585 showed the lowest TDM, HI, 1000-grain weight, yield and chlorophyll content under stress.

Objectives:

The objectives of the study were to assess the effect of water stress on different growth stages of rice genotypes and to find out stress tolerant genotype.

Methodology:

A pot experiment with three transplanted aman rice genotypes was carried out at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh during July 5 to December 6, 2003. The experiment was carried out with three aman rice genotypes namely Basmoti, Binadhan-4 and RD-2585 putting them at three different water stresses (100, 70 and 40% FC). The soil for his pot experiment was collected from BINA farm. Each pot contained 8 kg of soils. Soils were fertilized with cowdung 40 g pot^-1, urea 1.72 g pot^-1, TSP 1.44 g pot^-1, MP 0.8 g pot^-1, corresponding to 15 ton cowdung ha^-1, 215 kg urea ha^-1, 180 kg TSP ha^-1, and 100 kg MP ha^-1. Data were recorded on the following crop characters: plant height (cm), number of panicles hill^-1, panicle length, number of filled grains panicle^-1, number of unfilled grains panicle^-1, 1000-grain weight, total dry matter hill^-1, yield hill^-1 and harvest index. Leaf samples were collected at booting stage after the imposition of stress treatments. Chlorophyll was estimated following the procedure of Arnon (l975).The collected data were analyzed statistically following two factorial experiments in RCBD with the help of MSTAT computer packages (Russell, 1986).The mean differences were compared by Duncan's Multiples Range Test (DMRT) at 5 level of significance.
