Salinity Tolerance of Three Mungbean Genotypes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture Mymensingh, to evaluate mungbean genotypes viz., Binamoog-2 and two mutants E₅M₅₁₁ and N₅J₅₂₁, under salinity levels of 3.7 and 7.8 dS/m with a control (0.22 dS/m) during 15 February to 25 April of 2002. Plant height, number of primary and secondary branches, leaves, leaf area, filled pods per plant, number of grains per pod 1000-grain weight, gram yield per plant, total dry matter per plant and harvest index (HI) were decreased but number of unfilled pods per plant was increased with the increase of soil salinity compared to control. Binamoog-2 and mutant E₅M₅₁₁showed better performance on almost all the parameters under the salinity despite drastically reduction in those parameters. The mutant N₅J₅₂₁showed less tolerance to imposed salinity of 3.7 and 7.8 dS/m.

Objectives:

The objectives of the study were to assess sensitivity morphological and yield attributes of mungbean genotypes under imposed salinity stresses and to identify salt tolerant genotype.

Methodology:

A pot experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA) during 15 February to 25 April of 2002 to evaluate salinity tolerance of the mungbean genotypes viz., Binamoog-2 and two mutants E₅M₅₁₁ and N₅J₅₂₁ developed at BINA. The genotypes were collected from BINA, Mymensingh. Three kg soil was taken in each plastic pot. Fertilizers were applied in the amount of 5.06g Urea, 14.17g TSP and 7.087g MP per pot at the rate of 25, 70 and 35 kg per hectare as Urea, TSP and MP, respectively. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Adding 7.2g and 14.4g of NaCl in pot at 2 equal splits at weekly interval made soil salinity of 3.7 and 7.8 dS/m, respectively. At 38 days after sowing (DAS), the following treatments were started and maintained until harvest: T_o = control, no salt was added (average EC was found to be 0.22 dS/m) T₁= 0.45 NaCI of required for 60% FC in the soils (soil salinity obtained, EC= 3.7 dS/m), T₂ = 0.90% NaCI of required water for 60% FC in the soils (soil salinity obtained, EC= 7.8 dS/m). Plant height, number of primary branches, secondary branches, leaves, leaf area, filled and unfilled pods per plant, 1000-grain weight, total dry matter (TDM) per plant and harvest index were recorded. The collected data were analyzed with statistical program MSTAT-C. The mean differences were compared with Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at 5 level of significance.
