Effect of Soil Moisture Stress on Yield and Yield Contributing Characters of Three Chickpea Varieties

Objectives:

The objectives of the study were to assess the effect of different soil moisture levels on chickpea varieties and to find out stress tolerant genotype and suitable soil moisture level for optimum growth and yield.

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted in pots at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh during October through March 2003 to assess the effect of three soil moisture levels on the yield and yield contributing characters of three chickpea varieties. The three soil moisture levels were 70, 50 and 30% FC of field capacity and the three chickpea varieties were Hyprosola, Binasoloa-3 and Binasola-4. The soil was collected from BINA farm. Each pot contained 6 kg of soil. Sixty g cowdung, 0.18 g urea, 0.33 g TSP and 0.15 g MP were incorporated with the soil in each pot thoroughly to apply 6 ton cowdung, 30 kg urea, 55 kg TSP and 25 kg MP per hectare. Seeds were sown on 20 October 2002. The stress treatments were applied at 30 days after sowing and continued up to maturity. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. Plants were harvested at 60 and 90 days after sowing and at maturity. Data on Plant height, number of branches, leaf area, , total pods, unfilled pods and grains per plant, 100-seed weight, grain yield, total dry matter (TDM) per plant and harvest index were recorded. The collected data were analyzed with statistical program MSTAT-C. The mean differences were compared with Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at 5 level of significance.

Achievement/Findings:

Plant height, number of branches, leaf area, pods and grains per plant, 1000-grain weight, grain yield, total dry matter per plant and harvest index (HI) of chickpea genotypes were found the highest at 70% FC. All these parameters decreased with the decrease of soil moisture levels but unfilled pods per plant increased. Hyprosola showed the best performance among three the varieties.
