Effects of Supplemental Diets on the Growth of Pangas (pangasius Pangasius Ham.)in Net Cages

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out for a period of three months in nine net cages to determine the effects of three supplemental diets on the growth of riverine catfish Pangasius pangasius. Growth and net yield of Pangas were significantly higher in the diets I and II prepared with locally available ingredients when compared with diet Ill which was commercially prepared at the SABINCO Fish Feed Factory. Thus food prepared from locally available ingredients was found to be suitable for the culture of Pangasius pangasius species in cages.

Objectives:

The present work aimed to compare the suitability of two laboratory made and another commercially available feeds having similar protein level as feed for Pangas in the cage culture.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out for a period of three months from 15 May to 15 August, 1992 in nine cages in a pond adjacent to Faculty of Fisheries, Bangladesh Agricultural University Campus, Mymensingh. The size of the cages was 2.0 m x 1.5 m x 1.5 m each and was made of synthetic netting of mesh size 1.0 cm. A bamboo frame was made in the pond and all the net cages were fixed within this frame in such a position that one meter of the structure of each cage remained below and the remaining half meter was above water surface. Thus the effective size of each cage was 2.0 m x 1.5 m x 1.0m. All fishes from each cage were measured fortnightly for adjusting,the feeding rate. On the following day, the water temperature, dissolved oxygen and pH of pond water were recorded . The data obtained during the period of investigation were analyzed statistically to see whether the influence of different diets on the growth of fishes were significantly different or not.

Achievement/Findings:

The net yield of fishes/cage in diet I (2120.00 g) and diet II (2168.30 g) were nearly same, but both were higher than that of diet Ill ( 1731.70 g). It is because the growth rate of fishes fed with diet I and diet II was higher when compared with those fed with diet Ill. The food conversion ratios of all the diets had shown higher values which could be due to wastage of feed through crowding of fish near to small earthen sanki. Food formulation from locally available ingredients was found to be suitable for the rearing of Pangasius sp. in net cages. Food formulation with mustard oil cake gave better result when compared with the food having sesame oil cake, although growth performance did not show any significant differences. However, a further.long time investigation need to be carried out in order to find out a solution of a suitable diet for rearing of Pangasius pangasius.
