Evaluation of Existing Jackfruit Germplasm at Burirhat, Rangpur

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

On the basis of different qualitative and quantative characteristics ten existing jack fruit germplasm were evaluated at ARS, Burirhat, Rangpur during 2013-14. Among the studied germplasm the flowering time varied from 4^th week of January to 3^rd week of February. The fruits of AH Bur-001 were harvested in the 4^th week of May while the fruits of AH Bur-008 were harvested in the 2nd week of July. The yield and yield contributing characters also varied and maximum number of fruits per plant was found in AH Bur-001 (220) while minimum found in AH Bur-004 (35). Heaviest fruit (7.5 kg) was recorded from AH Bur-008 and lightest (5.0 kg) was recorded from AH Bur-009. Among the germplasm AH Bur-001 produced the highest yield (1210.0 kg/plant) and AH Bur-004 produced the lowest yield (186.0 kg/plant). Maximum number of bulbs per fruit (130) were recorded from AH Bur-001 while minimum (85) were recorded from AH Bur-005. The TSS percentage varied from 18 to 22. Maximum edible portion was obtained from AH Bur-007(43.33%) while minimum from AH Bur-008 (34.24%). Average seed weight was maximum (10.0 g) in AH Bur-004 and AH Bur-007 and minimum (6.0 g) in AH Bur-009. Considering the studied results, the germplasm AH Bur-001 showed better performance in respect of earliness, fruit size, yield and quality of the germplasm.

Objectives:

The study has been undertaken to evaluate the existing jack fruit germplasm to find out suitable germplasm (s) for release as variety(ies).

Methodology:

The study was conduced at ARS, Burirhat, Rangpur during 2012-13. Ten existing jackfruit germplasm were selected for the experiment. The age of the tress ranged from 16 to 81 years. Manures and fertilizers were applied as per BARI Projukti Hatboi (5^th edition, 2011). Intercultural operations such as weeding, irrigation and spraying of pesticides were done as and when necessary. Following quantitative characteristics viz. Plant height (cm), base girth (cm), canopy spread (m), time of flowering, time of harvesting, number of fruits/plant, single fruit weight (kg), fruit length (cm) fruit dia. (cm), yield/plant (kg), number of bulbs/ fruit, bulb weight/fruit, TSS (%), bulb length (cm), bulb breadth (cm), pulp wt/fruit (kg), single bulb wt. (g), edible portion (%), seed length (cm), seed breadth (cm), seed wt/fruit (kg) and single seed weight (g), and qualitative characteristics viz. taste, sweetness, fibrousness, bulb colour, bulb shape and viviparity were studied. for statistical interpretation simple statistical analysis i.e. range, mean, SE and CV (%) were calculated.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering earliness, fruit size, yield and fruit quality, the accession AH Bur-001 showed better performance and recommended for release as a variety.
