Economics of Guava Cultivation in Selected Areas of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The paper attempts to evaluate the economics of guava cultivation including its marketing in some selected areas of Bangladesh. The field survey conducted in 1982 indicates that production of Shwarupkati variety in Barisal was almost double as compared to Kanchannagar variety of Chittagong but money return from Kanchannagar variety was higher than the Shwarupkati variety due to the existence of better marketing facilities in Chittagong areas.

Objectives:

assessing the volume of production of guava,
determining the nature of cost items, amout of cost involves including the rate of return of guava cultivation; and
analysing the marketing of guava including identification of production and marketing problem .

Methodology:

On the basis of higher concentration of guava production.particularly of two varieties mentioned above, 5 villages frorn Shwarupkati Upazila of Barisal district (Old) and 6 villages from Patiya Upazila of Chittagog districts were selected. Fifty percent of Guava farmers from each of the villages,were selected randomly for field survey. The number of selected farmers stood at 150 of which 75 farmers from each of Barisal and Chittagong districts. Data were collected through interview schedules for a period of 3 years from 1980 to 1982 during the months of September to December, 1982.

Achievement/Findings:

The per hectare cost of production for guava varied from Tk. 1.300 in Barisal to Tk. 1440 in Chittagong. Three year's average of money return/ha, was found to vary from Tk. 20536 in Chittagong for Kanchannagar variety to Tk. 18656 in Barisal for Shwarupkati variety the overall average being Tk.19575/ha.
