Zinc-phosphorus Interaction on Dry Matter and Nutrient Content of Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Dry matter production of rice grown on three surface soils of Bangladesh Agricultural university Farm increased due to Zn and P application when applied in an optimum combination. Their increased supply caused significant reduction indicating a definite interaction between these two nutrients. Increased supply of Zn or P augmented the concentration of either nutrient in the plants. The effect of Zn and P was antagonistic to each other.

The present work deals with the effect of Zn-P fertilization on dry matter yield and nutrient content of rice.

Methodology:

A pot culture experiment was conducted to study the response of rice to Zn and P application in three surface (0-15 cm) soils (s) of Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm. The treatment consisted of three soils viz. S₁ (pH 6.2, EDTA Zn 1.11 ppm, organic carbon 0.78%, Olsen P 31 ppm). S₂ (pH 5.6, EDTA Zn 0..25 ppm, organic carbon 0.55%, Olsen P 35 ppm) and s₃ (pH 5.7, EDTA Zn 0.48 ppm, organic carbon 0.95%, Olsen P 33 ppm). three levels of Zn viz. Zn₀, Zn₁ and Zn₂ (0, 10 and 20 kg Zn/ha as ZnS04) and three levels of P viz. P₀ , P1 and P₂(0, 50 and 100 kg P/ha as triple super phosphate). Factorial design with three replications was adopted in the study. A basal nutrient mixture (1.2g/pot) containing N,K,S,Mn,Cu,Mo and B @ 100 kg N/ha as urea, 25 kg K /ha as muriate of potash, 20 kg S/ha as gypsum, 10 kg Mn/ha as MnS0 4, 5 kg Cu/ha as CuS04, 5H₂0, 2 kg Mo/ha as sodium molybdate and 2 kg B/ha as sodium borate were applied. All the nutrients were thoroughly mixed with the soil in each pot and irrigated daily. Six uniform and healthy seedlings of rice var. BR2 of 30 days old were transplanted in each well puddled pot of 314 sq. em. area contarmng 5 kg soil making three hills. Chemical analyses of di-acid digested extract of ground plant materials were done following stannous chloride method and by atomic absorption spectrophotometer . The data were analyzed and the mean differences were adjudged by LSD.

Achievement/Findings:

Significant effect of the S-P-Zn interaction was also not!ced on the P and Zn concentrations of rice grain and straw . The increasing supply of P in all combinations of Zn under study showed declining trend in Zn concentration in soils s₁ to s₃. However, the highest Zn content was obtained at s₁ P₀Zn₂ level while it was lowest at s₃Zn₀P₂_. Similarly with the increasing levels of P with all combinations of Zn significantly reduced the P concentration of rice which indicates the absolute negative relationship between these two nutrients. The highest P content was obtained at s₂ Zn₀P₁ level and the lowest at s₃ Zn₂P₁ level. From the results it is imperative that dry matter yield of rice increased significantly up to 10 kg Zn/ha and 100 kg P/ha and the concentration of Zn and P in rice increased due to application of those two nutrient elements. A sharp negative relationship was also observed between zinc and phosphorus and the effect was more pronounced with the increased dose of both Zn and P
