Effect of Sulphur and Method of Zinc Application on Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out with BR11 rice variety to study the effect of sulphur and method of zinc application. Treatment; included two levels of sulphur and four methods of zinc application. Sulphur favourably influenced panicle length,number of spikelets grains per panicle and 1000-grain weight, and considerably increased grain and straw yields over control. The best method of zinc application in the main field during land preparation and was followed by application in nursery bed. Application of zinc by dipping seedlings and at tillering stage also gave higher grain and straw yield than without zinc.

Objectives:

To finding out the effect of sulphur and method of zinc application on the growth and yield of transplant Aman rice.

Methodology:

The study was conducted in a medium high land of sandy loam soil at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during 17 Julv to 22 December, 1984. The study consisted of control and 10 Kg /ha of sulphur and 10 Kg/ha of zinc applied in the following form : (a ) In nurserybed, (b) Seedling root dipping, (c) In main field, (d) At tillering stage and (e) No zinc. The experiment was laid out in split- plot design by placing the level of sulphur in the main plot and method of zinc application in the sub-plot. The size of sub-plot was 3m x 2.5m. The experiment was replicated four times. BR11 (Mukta) variety of rice was used as the test crop. Sprouted seeds were uniformly sown in the nurserybed on 20 June 1984. During seedling raising there was enough rainfall and no irrigation in the nursery bed was needed.

Achievement/Findings:

The grain yield was significantly increased (6.45%) with the application of sulphur over control. The highest grain yield was obtained from the application of zinc in the main field with an increase of 26.47 % over control.
