In-situ Evaluation of Early Season Jackfruit Germplasm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The growth characters of early season jack fruit germplasm have been studied and found that the plant height and base girth of the germplasm were found to be 12.6 m and 1.77 m, respectively. The canopy spread in the N-S aspect was .11.7 m and in the E –W aspect was 10.2 m.The results of yield and yield contributing characters have been presented in Table 2. The germplasm AH Bur-011 gave flowering in 4^th week of July. Harvesting time was started from 1^st week of February. Single fruit weight was 9.66 kg. No. of bulbs/fruit and edible portion were 275 and 55.48%. The percentage of TSS was 24.0. Single bulb weight (16.66 g), bulb size (6.55 cm x 3.6 cm) and single seed weight (3.4 g) were found. The number of fruits and weight of fruits per plant were 103 and 994.98 kg, respectively.

Objectives:

To evaluate the performance of the selected early season jack fruit germplasm for release as variety.
To expand the fruit availability through introducing more early season varieties.

Methodology:

One out standing early season jack fruit germplasm (AH Bur-011) of about 46 years old has been found to bear fruit during early season Sadar Upazila of Rangpur district during 2011-12. The fruiting performance, earliness, yield and fruit quality was evaluated since 2012. Manures and fertilizers were applied according to BARI Krishi Projukti Hatboi (5^th edition, 2011). For present studies, fruit harvesting was started from December, 2013 to July, 2014. Following quantitative characteristics viz. Plant height (cm), base girth (cm), canopy spread (m), time of flowering, time of harvesting, number of fruits/plant, single fruit weight (kg), fruit length (cm) fruit dia. (cm), yield/plant (kg), number of bulbs/ fruit, bulb weight/fruit, TSS (%), bulb length (cm), bulb breadth (cm), pulp wt/fruit (kg), single bulb wt. (g), edible portion (%), seed length (cm), seed breadth (cm), seed wt/fruit (kg) and single seed weight (g) were studied.

Achievement/Findings:

The fruiting behaviour, earliness, fruit quality and yield potentiality was evaluate and found that the AH Bur-011 is a outstanding jack fruit germplasm and suitable for release as a variety.
