Effect of Feed Quality on Reproductive and Productive Performance of Cross-bred Dairy Cows in Rural Area of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

To evaluate the reproductive and productive performances of different cross- bred cows under field condition in relation to feed quality, information of 313 dairy cows were collected from 33 artificial insemination Sub- centre/ Points under the District AI centre, Rajshahi during 1993 to 2002. The results were analyzed from questionnaires answered by 33 FA (AI) and owners of cows in respective AI Sub- centre/ Points as well as from reading the AI and 100% progeny collection registers. Three quality of feed (Good, Fair. Poor) had significant (p<0.05) effect on reproductive and productive performance of dairy cows but good quality feed had shown the excellent performances. Post- partum heat period, days open, wastage days, service per conception, dry period and calving interval values were increased in feed quality of fair and poor. Genotypes of sire of cows had significant effect on all the reproductive and productive performance except service per conception in heifer. wastage and service per conception. The best reproductive and productive performances were obtained from the genotype of Friesian (F) and followed by L x F x F cross- breed of sire bulls. So, it can be concluded that the Good quality feed and genotype of Friesian (F) may be used for better reproductive and productive performances of dairy cows under the village condition.

Objectives:

To study the effect of different quality of feed on reproductive and productive performance of cross- bred dairy cows under village condition at greater Rajshahi district in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in 33 AI Sub- centres/ Points of four district namely Rajshahi, Natore, Nawabgonj and Naogaons for a period from 1993 - 2002. At the beginning the preliminary information were taken from different AI Sub- centres/ Points under the District AI Centre (DAI), Rajshahi. Out of the total list of about 82 AI Sub- centres/ Points, only 33 AI Sub- centres/ Points were selected randomly for data collection. The data were collected from 313 cows among the 33 AI Sub- centres/ Points under the district AI centre, Rajshahi. The cows of sire was classified into 7 genotype groups, such as Group I: Friesian (F), Group II: Sahiwal (SL), Group III: Local x Friesian x Friesian (L x F x F) cross, Group IV: Sahiwal x Friesian (SL x F) cross, Group V: Local x Friesian (L x F) cross, Group VI: Local x Sahiwal x Friesian (L x SL x F) cross and Group VII: Sindhi x Sahiwal (S x SL) cross. A total of 313 questionnaire / progeny's information was collected from properly filled up forms collected by 33 Field Assistants (AI) of AI Sub- centres/ Points. After collecting the questionnaire, preliminary sorting and checking, data were prepared for analysis. Various standard statistical procedures had been adopted in this study. Mean of different feed quality and genotypes of sire were than tested by Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT) to determine the effect of breed and feed.

Achievement/Findings:

Good quality feed resulted in the shorter post - partum heat period, days open, wastage days and service per conception. The mean gestation length, milk yield per day, peak milk yield /day, lactation length, lactation yield were highest in the animal with fed with good quality feed. The total reproductive and productive parameters were worst in animal feed with poor quality feed. L x F cross- bred of cows had excellent performances for the reproductive and productive parameters under field condition at greater Rajshahi district as well as Friesian (F) breed and L x F x F cross- bred of sire had better reproductive and productive performances.
