Response of Wheat to Zinc and Phosphorus Fertilization in a Noncalcareous Soil

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot experiment was carried out to investigate the response of wheat to Zn and P fertilization in a non-calcareous soil. Three levels of zinc viz . 0, 10 and 20 kg Zn/ha as zinc sulphate and three levels of phosphorus viz. 0, 100 and 200 kg P/ha as triple super phosphate were used. Dry matter yield of wheat was increased significantly due to P and Zn application. The concentration of Zn and P significantly increased in plant, pre-sowing and post-harvest soils with the increasing supply of Zn and P respectively. Antagonistic effect of P on Zn and vise-versa was also observed with respect to dry matter yield, Zn and P content in both plant and soil.

Objectives:

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of Zn and P on the yield and mineral content of wheat plant.

Methodology:

A pot culture experiment was conducted to study the response of wheat to Zn and P fertilization at the Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm (BAUF). The experiment consisted of three soils viz. S₁ (pH 6.2, EDTA Zn 1.11 ppm, organic carbon 0.78%, Olsen P 31 ppm). S₂ (pH 5.6, EDTA Zn 0.25 ppm, organic carbon 0.55%, Olsen P 35 ppm) and S₃ (pH 5.7, EDTA Zn 0.48 ppm, organic carbon 0.95%, Olsen P 33 ppm), three levels of Zn viz. Zn ₀ (No Zinc). Zn₁₀ 10kg Zn/ha) and Zn₂₀ (20kg Zn/ha) and three levels of P viz. P₀(No P), P ₁₀₀ (100 kg P/ha) and P ₂₀₀(200kg P/ha). Zn and P were applied as ZnS04 and Ca (H₂P0₄) ₂, H₂0 respectively. Factorial design with three replications was used in the study. Fifty gram each of pre-sowing and post-harvest soil from each pot was sampled for laboratory analyses. Soil Zn and Olsen P was extracted by EDTA and sodium bicarbonate respectively. Chemical analyses of di-acid digested extract of ground plant materials were done for P and Zn. P was determined by stannous chloride method and Zn was determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The data were analysed statistically and the mean differences were adjudged by LSD.

Achievement/Findings:

In both pre-sowing and post-harvest soils it was observed that the concentration of Olsen P were significantly decreased with the increasing levels of Zn application but increased with P application. It may be due to the formation of insoluble zinc -phosphate with higher levels of Zn and P application to the soil. When only P was applied to the soil, then most of it may undergo to extractable form, as a result P concentrations in both pre-sowing and post-harvest soils were increased. The mobility of P when grown on a P deficient soil tended to be reduced by Zn treatment.
