Influence of Planting Time on the Growth and Yield of Some Modern Transplanted Aman Rices

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The varieties BR4, BRIO, BRll, BR22, BR23 and Rajasail were grown from 1 August and continued up to 5 October with 15 days interval during T. Aman, 1991 and 1992 at the BRRl Sonagazi farm, Feni to determine their optimum planting time and to select suitable varieties for late transplanted condition.Tiller and panicle numbers of all the varieties gradually decreased with delayed planting with little fluctuation. All varieties gave higher grain yield in 1 August planting and yield gradually decreased with the advancement of planting dates. Weakly photoperiod- sensitive varieties could be planted up to 1 September. Beyond 15 September planting, BR22 and BR23 performed better than other varieties. Growth duration of the tested varieties gradually decreased with delay planting.

Objectives:

To determine the optimum planting time of five modern variety (MV) of rices in Feni area.

Methodology:

The field experiment was conducted at BRRI, Regional Station, Sonagazi farm during T Aman season in 1991 and 1992 in a silty loam soil. Five MV rices BR4, BR10, BRll, BR22 and BR23 were compared with local improved Rajasail. Transplanting of seedlings were started from 1 August and continued up to 15 September with 15 days interval and beyond 15 September planting interval was 10 days up to 5 October. The experimental area was laid out in a split plot design with three replications. Transplanting dates were placed in the main plots and varieties in the subplots. The unit plot size was 3 x m. Thirty-day-old seedlings were transplanted with 3-4 seedlings / hill at 20x 20cm spacing. Fertilizers as P₂0₅, K₂0 and S were applied during final land preparation at the rate of 40-40-10 kg/ ha from triple phosphate, muriate of potash and gypsum respectively. Nitrogen was applied @ 60 kg N/ ha from urea and one-third at basal. Rest of the nitrogen was top dressed in two equal splits, at 15 days after transplanting (DAT) and at 7 days before panicle initiation (Pl) stage. All other cultural practices were done as and when necessary. At maturity total tillers and panicles were recorded from 10 sample hills in each sub plot. The sample hills were selected at random leaving the boarder rows and 5m² was harvested from each plot for grain yield and was adjusted at 14% moisture content. The collected data were analyzed following standard statistical procedure and the means were compared following DMRT.

Achievement/Findings:

Weakly photoperiod-sensitive varieties BRIO and BRll can be planted up to 1 September where yield of around 3 t/ ha could be obtained. On the other hand strongly photoperiod sensitive BR22 and BR23 gave consistently high yield up to 15 September and these two varieties are suitable for late plantation.
