Effect of Cultivar and Time of Nitrogen Application on Grain Yield and Grain Protein Content of Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The effect of N application at different growth stages of BR14, BR15, and BR16 cultivars of rice as direct seeded Aus crops was studied to determine the growth stage (s) most sensitive to N application in terms of grain yield and grain protein content. Although the cultivars were similar with respect to grain yield and grain protein content, BR14 had the tallest plants (100 cm) with the shortest growth duration (135 days). Nitrogen fertilization at late tillering stage gave higher grain yield (2.8t1ha) which resulted from higher tillering ability, higher percentage of tiller survival and greater grain bearing capacity than when N was applied at any other growth stage. Grain protein increased significantly with a delay in N fertilization. Grain protein content was the highest, 7.82%, when N was applied at the anthesis stage.

Objectives:

To identify the critical stage is necessary for better N nutrition management for rice.

Methodology:

An experiment was carried out in an experimental field of the Agronomy Field Laboratory of the Bangladesh Agrioultural University (BAU). Mymensingh, during April to August 1986. The soil was silt loam with a 0.09% total N content. Three cultivars, BR14, BR15 and BR16, and N application at four growth stages, early tillering, late tillering, booting and anthesis, were the experimental treatments, A split-plot design with 4 replications was used in which the cultivars were placed in the main plots and times of N application in the subplots, each measuring 5m X 3m. The subplots were separated from one another by levees and irrigation drains. Seeds of the cultivars were procured from BRRI. Nitrogen P and K fertilizers were applied at the rates of 60-40-40 kg/ha. Half of the N (urea) and the full doses of P and K fertilizers were applied during final land preparation. The remaining urea was top dressed at different growth stages of rice in accordance with the experimental treatments. Seeds were drilled on 24 April 1986 in lines 25 cm apart. Severe weed infestation was noticed during the early stages of crop growth. To control weeds, 3 weedings were done with a hand hoe, 25, 35 and 45 days after seeding (DAS), About 45 DAS, ZnS0₄ (at the rate of 10kg/ha) was applied as the plants showed symptoms of Zn deficiency. At maturity, 10 plants were selected randomly, uprooted and washed for collection of data on plant height, total and fertile tillers per plant, filled and unfilled grains per panicle. Grains from each plot excluding border rows were sundried and weights taken. For grain protein content, grain samples from the plots were sent to the Soil Science Laboratary of BAU to determine grain N content. The analytical values were multiplied by 5.95 to estimate grain protein content.

Achievement/Findings:

The results thus suggest that the most appropriate growth stage for N top dressing of direct-seeded Aus rice is the late tillering stage for achieving high grain yield and the anthesis stage for high grain protein content.
