A Comparative Study of Super Granular and Prilled Urea Application in Irrigated Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted in the farmers' fields at the BRRI project area, Gazipur during the Boro seasons of 1988-89 and 1989-90. Nitrogenous fertilizer were applied at the rate of 29, 58 and 87 kg/ ha, separately, from urea super granule (USG) and prilled urea (PU). The performance of USG was found better than that of PU in relation to grain yield and economic profitability. Marginal and partial budgeting techniques were used to compare the benefits of USG application over PU. The marginal rate of return (MRR) was highest for USG application at 58 kg N /ha in both the years. Farmers' reactions were in favour of the superiority of USG over PU.

Objectives:

Methodology:

This experiment was conducted at Masterbari and Naozore sites of BRRI project area, Gazipur, during the Boro seasons of 1988-89 and 1989-90. Three different doses of fertilizer, 29, 58, and 87 kg N /ha were used from both USG and PU. One, two and three granules of USG were placed in the middle of 4 hills of rice plants. All USG was applied at a time and PU was applied in three equal splits. The test crop was BR14. From sowing to harvesting, BRRI-recommended cultural practices were followed. To compare the benefits of USG application over PU, average grain yield, gross return, and gross margin, variable costs of each treatment were worked out. Fertilizers and labourers needed for fertilizer application were the only variable cash costs for those treatments and the rest of the costs were considered to be constant. The price of USG was assumed to be 10% higher than that of PU. Mentionably,in both the experiments of 1988-89 and 1989-90, labourers needed for treatments using USG were for its application and weeding; whereas, in the case of PU, labourers needed were for its application, weeding and fertilizer incorporation. Marginal analysis and partial budgeting techniques were used to compare the benefits of USG application over PU.
