Variations and Interrelationship in Root and Shoot Characters of Selected Rices Under Aeroponic Culture

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The root and shoot characteristics of 17 aus rices of Bangladesh and 3 upland rice varieties of the Philippines were studied under aeroponic culture. Plant characteristics contributing to drought resistance, namely thick radicle, deep and thick root, high root- shoot ratio, low tiller number and tall plant are present in the traditional aus and upland rice varieties which have high or moderately high levels of drought resistance.

Objectives:

To study on the variations and the relationships among root and shoot characters that contribute to drought resistance in rice under aeroponic culture.

Methodology:

Seventeen aus rices of Bangladesh and 3 upland rice varieties of the Philippines, along with 1 upland variety from Guienea (Moroberekan) and semidwarf IRRI variety (IR20) were included in this study. All the varieties were tested using an aeroponic culture technique developed by Carter (1941) and modified by Armenta-Soto (1981) in the IRRI Phytotron glasshouse with 29⁰C/21⁰C day night temperature at 70% relative humidity. The aeroponic set-up consisted of 6 round drums with fibre glass sides and wooden covers (104 x C 1.4 cm) and bottoms. The covers contains 97 holes each 5.0 cm in diameter, spaced at 7.5 cm from one hole centre to anther. Out of the 6 drums only 3 drums were used for this study and each drum represented a replication. A randomized complete block design with 3 replications was used with a population size of 3 plants per variety per replication. Eleven days old seedlings were transplanted into a styrofoam plant holder and grown in the aeroponic culture. The culture solution for feeding the roots was prepared from the stock solution based on the formula of Yoshida. et al. (1976). During the 1st week after transplanting, a 50% concentration of the culture solution was used. In the 2nd and 3rd weeks, the full concentration of the culture solution was used. The pH of the solution in the reservoir was checked thrice daily and maintained between 5.O to 6.0. The plants were sampled 40 d after sowing (DS). The plant characters measured were radicle length, radicle diameter, root length, root thickness, root dry weight, shoot dry weight, root- shoot ratio, tiller number and plant height. Appropriate statistical analyses of the data were performed.

Achievement/Findings:

It was observed that all of the upland and the most of the aus varieties produced taller plants and fewer tillers than the susceptible varieties. The results indicate that the varieties with short radicle, low tiller number, thick roots as well as high root-shoot ratio will be drought resistant.
