A Comparative Study on the Pattern of Growth in Local and Exotic Cultivars of Garlic

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted with a local and an Indian garlic to adjudge their ecological performances. The local cultivar had significantly higher leaf area index and biological yield. The economic yield of the local cultivar was also higher but not significant. The exotic cultivar had higher bulb diameter resul ting higher harvest index than the local. The pattern of crop growth rete, relative growth rate, net assimilation rate, bulb diameter and bulbing-ratio at various stages of plant growth was more or less similar in both the cultivars. Bulb Initiation started at the same time in both the cultivars.

Objectives:

To evaluate the pattern of grow th of the local and the exotic cultivars of garlic in relation to their adaptation and productivity through growth analysis.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the experimental field of the Department of Crop Botany, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from November 1988 to March 1989. Meteorological data ( monthly mean ) of the experimental site of the growing season is shown In Table 1 (Anon., 1989). The experiment consisted of two treatments of two cultivars, one Bangladeshi local (Check variety, 68 g/100 cloves) and another South Indian cultivar "Fawari" (170g/100 cloves). The unit plots measured 4m X 3m size in which seed cloves were pIanted at 1Ocm X 25cm apart on 8 November 1988. The plots were laid out in the randomized complete block design with 5 replicates. Cow dung and triple super phosphate were applied at the rate of 10 t/ha and 148 kg/ha, respectively as basal doses.Urea and mur iate of potash were applied at the rate of 173 kg/ha and 148 kg/ha, respecti vely as top dressing in two equal installments, 20 and 45 DAP (days after planting).The crops were irrigated when required. Dithane M-45 was app lied thrice at 20 days interval as a check against any possible pathogenfc infection.With a view to evaluating growth pattern, crop samplings beginning from 28 DAP were carried out at seven days interval and continued until 119 DAP. The plants from each harvested area ( one square mater ) were uprooted carefully and brought to the laboratory in polythene bags to minimize transpiration aud respiratory loses. Then the harvests were washed In running tap water and blotted with blotting paper.

Achievement/Findings:

The present study indicated that local cultivar produced statistically similar pattern of CGR, RGR and NAR with exotic cultivar together with higher LAI, biological yield and economic yield on unit area basis. The exotic cultivar had heavier bulbs resulting in high HI. A reduction In HI in the local cultivar compared to exotic one was indicative to the inefficiency of attracting sufficient assimilates to the storage organs. The potentiality of exotic cultivar to this effect even with reduced biological and economic yield, might tempt the future workers to undertake work to adjudge economic feasibility of exotic cultivar in Bangladesh.
