Effect of Green Manuring on the Growth and Yield of Transplant Aman Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Effect of four green manuring through (Sesbania aculeata, Sesbania rostrata, Crotalaria junc ea and Vigna mungo) including fallowing of the land were assessed on the performance of T. Aman rice during 1992 at BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur. After fallow or incorporation of green manure crops, rice seedlings (BR11) were transplanted, and fertilized with 0, 40, 80 and 120 kg N/ha. Grain yields and most of growth and yield attributes of rice were highest when green manured with Sesbania rostrata followed by Sesbania aculeata, blackgram (Vigna mungo) and sunhemp (Crotolaria juncea ). N fertilization influenced rice growth parameters and yield. Green manuring crops improved the organic matter and total nitrogen content of the soil as compared to fallow land. Only 40 kg N/ha will be needed to grow rice after green manuring against that of 80 kg N/ha w ithout green manuring.

Objectives:

To evaluate the effects of different green manure crops on the growth, yield and N requirement of succeeding transplant aman rice.

Methodology:

Seeds of dhaincha, blackgram and sunhemp were inoculated with appropriate rhizobium strains and sown during mid-May, 1992. A basal dose of 60 kg P₂0_5,40 kg K₂0 and 20 kg S/ha were applied in green manuring crops as TSP, MP and gypsum, respectively. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The four green manuring crop species and a fallow plot were treatment variables . Green manuring crops i.e. dhaincha and sunhemp were incorporated in the first week of July and blackgram at the end of June, 1992. Each plot was then sub-divided into four sub- plots. The unit plot area was 2 m x 4.5 m. Soil samples were collected from the plots receiving green manure at a depth of 0-20 cm before transplanting of rice seedlings for the determination of total nitrogen and organic matter content. The plots were fertilized with 0, 40 , 80 and 120 kg N/ha. Twenty eight day old rice seedlings of BR 11 were transplanted in lines maintaining 25 x 20 cm spacing during first week of August , 1992. The fallow plot was also fertilized with N, P₂0₅, K₂0 and S @ 80-60-40-20 kg/ha. Whole of P₂0₅, K₂0 and S were applied as basal dose at final land preparation through triple superphosphate ,muriate of potash and gypsum, respectively. Nitrogen was applied as urea in three equal splits at 15, 30 and 45 days of transplanting. The hills were uprooted and washed with water. Leaf area was measured and then dried in over at 80°C for 48 hours and for recording dry weight. Data for determining yield components were taken from 5 rice hills selected at random from each plot. The crop was harvested during 4th week of November, 1992. A fter threshing the seeds were sun dried for several days and then weighed. Data were statistically analyzed and the means were separated or adjudged by ISO.
