Serum Transa Minase Activities of Normal and Fasciola Infected Zebu Cattle

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The serum transaminase serum glutamic oxalacetic tranaaminase, SGOT and serum glutamci pyruvic transamina se, SGPT) activities of 40 appar ently normal and 40 Fasciola infected zebu cattle of both young ( 1 to 4 yrs.) and adult (above 4 yrs. to 10 yrs.) groups were estimated. The mean values (U/L) of serum transaminase In young normal, adult normal. young Infected and adult infected c attle were: GOT-25.90±5.44, 24.511±3.29, 43.55±8.99 and 42.15 ±9.75; GPT-6.17±0. 85. 6.27±1.04, 14.34±4.99 and 13.37±4.93, respectively. A significant ( P<0.01) elevation in SGOT and SGPT activities were observed in both Fasciola infected young and adult groups.

Objectives:

To study the SGOT and SGPT activities of young and adult healthy and Fasciola infected zebu cattle.

Methodology:

The samples for this study were collected from 40 apparently healthy and 40 Fasciola infected zebu cattle for a period of one year from Apri1988 to March'89. Both apparently healthy and Fasciola Infected animals were grouped. young (I to 4 yrs.) and adult (above 4 yrs. to 10 vrs. ). of 20 animal in each group. The apparently healthy animals ware selected from the Agronomy Farm of Bangladesh Agricultural University and treated with anthelmintics (Nemafex (R ). @ 1g/40 kg body wt., after 21 days Fasinex (R),@ 10 mg/kg ·body wt.). The faces of these animals were examined at 7 day intervals for a period of 42 days and the absence of parasitic ova for 3 subsequent examination· were considered as gastro-intes tinal parasite free animals. The Fas ciola infected animals were selected, by observing the Fasciola egg-; in the faeces (direct smear·method), from the animals brought to the veterinary cli nics of Bangladeh Agricultural University for treatment.The blood from all the selected animals (normal young & adult, Fasci ola infected young & adult) were collected from the jugular veins and the sera were separated accordingly, kept individually in the sterilized g13ss vials. The transaminase ( SGOT & SGPT ) activities were de termined immediately following the method of Reitman and Frank'31 (1957). For this purpose the kits of Boahringer Mannheim GmbH Dlagnostica ( Fisons Bangladesh ltd. ) were used and the assays were perfor med at 37°C at 540 nm wave length by Bausch and Lomb spectronic 20. The enzyme activities were expressed in the international Units (U/ L). Statistical analysis for significance were performed according to the method of Fisher's · t" test.
