Evaluation of Superior Mango Chance Seedlings at Gazipur

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Six superior chance seedlings of mango namely MI Joy-001, MI Joy-002, MI Joy-003, MI Joy-004, MI Joy-005 and MI Joy-006 are grown in the Fruit Research Farm of Horticulture Research Centre, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur and studied during 2013-14. Among them only three superior mango germplasm namely MI Joy-002, MI Joy-004, and MI Joy-005 produced fruits. Among the germplasm a wide range of variation was recorded for plant height. MI Joy-005 exhibited maximum plant height (4.68 m) closely followed by MI Joy-002 (4.35 m). Among the ?fruit producing germplasm full bloom took place from early to late February. All the germplasm had the mid season fruits harvested from 1^st week of June to 3^rd week of June. Number of fruits per tree varied from 102 in MI Joy-004 to 242 in MI Joy-005. Maximum fruit weight was recorded from MI Joy-004 (260.3 g) and minimum fruit weight was recorded from MI Joy -002 (178.5 g). The largest fruit was obtained from MI Joy-004 with 9.19 cm length, 7.30 cm breadth and 6.88 cm thickness while the smallest from MI Joy-002 (7.40 cm length, 6.34 cm breadth and 5.95 cm thickness). The highest TSS was noted in MI Joy-004 (20%) while the lowest was in MI Joy-005 (18.07%).

Objectives:

Study the performance of selected mango germplasm under Gazipur condition.
To study the performance of chance seedlings in respect of adaptability, yielding ability and quality of mango

Methodology:

Six superior chance seedlings of mango namely MI Joy-001, MI Joy-002, MI Joy-003, MI Joy-004, MI Joy-005 and MI Joy-006 were studied under HRC, BARI, Gazipur during 2013-14. The study was laid out in a Randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. One year old vineer grafts were planted in the field on July 2006 at a spacing of 8 m × 8 m. A single tree of each germplasm constituted the unit of replication. The trees were fertilized with 25 kg rotten cowdung, 750 g urea, 500 g TSP, 250 g MoP, 250 g gypsum and 15 g zinc sulphate in two split doses of manure and fertilizers (recommended dose for 8-10 years old plant) at the beginning and the end of the rainy season with light irrigation. Intercultural operations such as weeding and ploughing were done in the month of September, December, March, May and July. Regular irrigation with 15 days and 30 days interval were applied at blooming stage and fruiting stage, respectively. Ripcord @ 1 ml and Tilt 250 EC@ 0.5 ml per litre of water was applied twice, one before flower opening stage and another one at pea stage to control mango hopper and anthracnose. Necessary actions were taken against other pest and diseases as and when needed. Data on tree growth as well as quantitative characteristics were recorded as per ‘Descriptors for Mango’ published by IBPGR in 1989. Tree volume was calculated by using the formula of Castle (1983). Tree Volume= 1/6 p × plant height × (2r)², where 2r = (East-West spread + North-South spread)/2.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering overall growth condition, yield and fruit quality almost all the germplasm were appeared satisfactory. Considering plant growth, yield and yield contributing characters and fruit quality the germplasm MI Joy-004 was found superior among the fruit producing germplasm.
