Inheritance of Spikelet and Primary Branch Number in a Six-parent Diallel Cross of Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The inheritance of spikelet number and primary branch number per panicle was studied in a six-parent diallel cross of rice. In case of spikelet number per panicle, over dominance was observed whereas partial dominance was found for primary branch number per panicle. The presence of nonallelic interaction of the complementary type was indicated for both the characters. Correlation coefficient values for the characters showed the presence of an equal proportion of positive and negative dominant genes in the parents. Symmetrical distribution of genes with plus and minus effects at loci showing dominance was observed in the parents for spikelet number per panicle. Only one group of dominant genes was observed to condition both the traits. Heritability for spike let number per panicle was estimated at 33.23% in the narrow sense and 93.91 % in the broad sense.

Objectives:

To study the inheritance of spikelet number and primary branch number per panicle in a six-parent diallel cross of rice.

Methodology:

Six rice genotypes, viz : (1) IR934-339-25-7, (2) IR393-15-5, (3) IR532-1-14-3-1, (4) IR532-1-222-1-1, (5) Habigonj Boro II, and (6) Chinese were crossed in all possible combinations without reciprocal in 1972. In 1973, seeds of 15 F 1 hybrids and their parents were grown in the field following a randomized complete block design with two replications. Data were collected on an individual plant basis for spikelet number per panicle and primary branch number per panicle. The experimental data were analyzed following the diallel techniques developed by Jinks and Hayman (1953), Jinks (1954) and Hayman (1954 a,b) and elaborated by Dickinson and Jinks (1956) and Johnson and Aksel (1959). For standardized deviation graphs, the techniques of Johnson and Aksel (1959) were followed.
