Phenological Growth Patterns of Mango Varieties Under Central Region of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Phenological responses were studied on five mango cultivers viz. BARI Mango-1, BARI Mango-3, BARI Mango-4, Langra and Fazli at Fruit Research Farm of HRC, BARI, Gazipur. The result revealed that plants of BARI Mango-4 was prompt in primary vegetative flushing while BARI Mango-3 was found late.The BARI Mango-4 required maximum days for the completion of primary vegetative flushing and BARI Mango-3 required minimum (44 days). The inflorescence emergence of mango was quicker in BARI Mango-1 and late in Langra. Among the studied mango varieties BARI Mango-1 required maximum days (39 days) for the completion of inflorescence emergence, while Fazli required minimum days (12 days). Plants of BARI Mango-3 were found earlier in fruit setting while Langra was noted delayed. Plants of Fazli required maximum days (10 days) for completing of fruit set and BARI Mango-4 required minimum days (6 days). BARI Mango-1 was early variety and harvesting was started from 28 May while, BARI Mango-4 was found late variety and harvesting was started in this variety on 15 July. Among the studied mango varieties harvest duration was wider in BARI Mango-3 (14 days), while BARI Mango-1 and Fazli had minimum (10 days) harvesting duration.

Objectives:

To study the phenological growth patterns, flowering and fruiting behavior of BARI Mango-1, BARI Mango-3, BARI Mango-4, Langra and Fazli varieties of mango at central region of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The studies were conducted at HRC, BARI, Gazipur, Bangladesh during August 2008 to May 2010. Three released mango varieties viz. BARI Mango-1, BARI Mango-3 and BARI Mango-4, and 2 commercial mango varieties viz. Langra and Fazli were used as treatment. Stack of selected mango varieties grafted onto mango rootstock, planted 6 m × 5 m apart. Measurements and observations were carried out during several growing seasons in a frequency depending on the stage, from two to three times per week to once each 15 days. Date of each developmental stage and morphological characteristics of each developing organ was recorded for each cultivar. The experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block (RCB) design with three replications. five cultivar viz. BARI Mango-1, BARI Mango-3, BARI Mango-4, Langra and Fazli were considered as treatment. Each treatment consists of single plant. The data were recorded on the following parameters- days to primary vegetative flashing, days to inflorescence emergence, days to fruit setting and harvesting. Data on collected parameters were analyzed, following strip-plot design using MSTAT-C program.

Achievement/Findings:

From study it was revealed that plants of BARI Mango-1 was found the quicker in inflorescence emergence while BARI Mango-4 was late. It was revealed that plants of BARI Mango-1 was early variety and harvesting was started from 31 April followed by BARI Mango-3 (27 March) while BARI Mango-4 was found late variety and harvesting was started in this variety at 15 July.
