Variability, heritability and genetic advance for the characters viz. number of tillers per plot, number of millable canes per plot, number of internodes per cane, height of cane. cane girth, single cane weight, brix percentage, sucrose percentage and cane yield per plot were studied with 22 promising r.lones and one standard variety of sugarcane . The genotypes were found to differ significantly for alf the characters. The genotype I 290-87 produced highest number of tillers and cane yield. The genotype I 294-87 produced highest cane girth and single cane weight but was identical with the genotype I 290-87. Number of tillers per plot, cane yield per plot and single cane weight had high genotypic coefficient of variation. High heritability with high genetic advance in percentage of mean was observed for number of tillers per plot and single cane weight .

To find the nature and extent of genetic advance of some important parameters contributing to the cane yield of sugarcane.

The experiment was conducted at the sugarcane research farm of Sugarcane Research and Training Institute (SRTI) , lshurdi during 1990-91 with 22 different clones. Data on number of titters/plot, number of millable canes/plot, number of internodes/cane, height of cane (ml. cane girth (cm), single stalk weight (kg) cane yield/plot (kg). Brix(%) and sucrose(%) were recorded. For first two characters the middle three rows/plot were considered and rest of the characters average of randomly ten individuals/clones were considered. Standard formulas were used for  statistical analysis .
