Water Saving Techniques for Crop Production

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Experiments on different irrigation intervals were conducted at the Amla farm, Kushtia and the North Bangladesh Tubewell Project Thakurgaon for water saving in rice irrigation. The results of the experiments indicated that 10 days irrigation interval was the best with respect to yield and water requirement . The study also showed that irrigation after 3 days of disappearing surface water required substantially less irrigation water and produced economic yield. It was also observed from the study that in water shortage area good yield of wheat can be achieved by irrigating only once during either tillering or booting stage.

Objectives:

To determine suitable interval of irrigation for better yield and reduced water use
To determine suitable time of irrigation for wheat where there is shortage of water for full irrigation.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in Amla Experimental farm, Kushtia and North Bangladesh Tubewell (NBT) Project, Thakurgaon. At Amla farm the study was conducted in Aus, T. Aman and Boro seasons. There were five treatments and each were replicated 3 times in RCB design. Seedling ages in Aus, Aman and Boro seasons were 30, 35 and 45 day respectively, and planted at a spacing of 20- x 20-cm. Fertilizers were applied at the rate of 80-60- 40 kg (NPK) per hectare. In North Bangladesh Tubewell project the study was conducted in Aus season only in tubewell no. 126 area . In this area, the irrigation interval was slightly modified. Treatments were replicated 3 times. Purbachi variety of rice was used with 30 days old seedlings. Time and methods of fertilizer application and plot size were same as in Amla farm. Irrigation at different growth stages of wheat This study was conducted in the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) farm, Thakurgaon. There were five treatments which were replicated 3 times. The Kanchan variety of wheat was sown in line. Row to row distance was 20 cm. Fertilizer rate was 80-60-40 kg/ ha NPK. The whole of PK and one-third of N were applied as basal dose during the final land preparation. Rest of the N-fertilizer was applied in 2 equal splits. During each irrigation total volume of water was measured by V-Notch. Benefit-cost ratio was calculated considering price of rice @ Tk 5/ kg, straw value 10% of the main product, Tubewell discharge 1.5 cusec (42 I/sec) and irrigation charge Tk 60/ hr of pump operation.

Achievement/Findings:

In Aus and Aman seasons, highest benefit- cost ratio was obtained from treatment T₄ (15 days irrigation interval). In Boro season , maximum benefit was obtained from treatment T₃ (10 days irrigation interval). Irrigation after 3 days of disappearing standing water also gave the highest benefit -cost ratio (6.64) in Aus season. In wheat one irrigation at tillering stage gave the highest benefit-cost ratio(9.87) in Rabi season. In water shortage areas, irrigation at tillering stage or at booting stage is recommended for economic yield of wheat.
