Study on Tengratila Gas Field Second Blow Out Devastation on Biotic

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted in 3 villages (Tengratila, Girishnogor and Alipur) at Dowarabazzar Upazilla under Sunamganj district during 26 June to 20 July, 2005. The researchers collected information themselves through interview from the individual respondent at their locality. The study revealed that highly significant (p<1%) average height of firing flames was recorded from Tengratila village as 102 meter followed by 95.5 meter for Girishnogor and 92.2 meter for Alipur. Significant average firing distance (p<5%) was recorded as 800 meter, 808.4 meter and 818.46 meter in Tengratila, Girishnogor and Alipur, respectively. The average longevity of blowout was estimated as 22.07 days, 21 days and 19.25 in Tengratila, Girishnogor and Alipur villages, respectively. The environment of the study area had considerably damaged for all living organisms. The average number of people migrated from Tengratila, Girishnogor and Alipur villages was 662.7, 224.37 and 109.75 where as the recorded people forced to various illness were average 129.66, 48.88 and 19, respectively. Children aged below five years and pregnant women were most vulnerable to such contamination. Most trees around one kilometer of the exploration site had damaged, some trees burnt fully and some partially. The crop loss in Tengratila, Girishnogor and Alipur were estimated as 5.25 lakh Tk, 3.375 lakh Tk and 2.625 lakh Tk respectively due to sand deposition, continuous flow of warm air and heat. In Tengratila, Girishnogor and Alipur, the death of poultry was highest level after that cattle and goat were second and third position, respectively. Lower level fish were severely affected comparatively upper level fish in the water resources.

Objectives:

To show the extent of devastation of second blowout at Tengratila gas field.

Methodology:

The survey was conducted at the surrounding area by emphasizing Tengratila, Girishnogor and Alipur villages of Tengratila gas field at Dowarabazzar Upazilla under Sunamganj district in Bangladesh during 26 June to 20 July, 2005. In the study, 30 respondents were randomly selected as the data collecting site.The researcher collected information themselves through interview from the individual respondent at their locality. The researcher established desired rapport with respondent. The information was cheek care fully before leaving the study area in order to minimize errors. The respondents were interviewed at the locality in leisure time so that they could give accurate information in sound mind. The parameters recorded during data collection from the study were as follows: Firing height ( vertically), Firing distance ( horizontally) and Longevity of blowout. Data on human migration, illness and mortality; plant devastation including mortality and damaged plant sp.; crop devastation in hector; feasibility of animal rearing, migration and death of animal sp. and No. of death fish sp. were also considered. After completion of data, the response were coded, tabulated and analyzed to accomplish the objectives of the study. Statistical analysis of the data were done with the computer following the standard procedure as described by Gomez and Gomez.
