Yield Performance of Rapeseed and Mustard Varieties/mutants in Rangpur Region Under Farmers’ Management Practices

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Experiments were conducted at farmers’ field under T. aman-mustard-Boro cropping pattern of two Upazilla of Rangpur district viz., Rangpur sadar and Pirgasa during winter season of 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 to evaluate the performance of 11 mutants/varieties. Two advanced mutants viz., MM-19 and MM-20 and eight recently released varieties viz., Agrani, Safal, Binasarisa-3, Binasarisa-4, BARIsarisa-6, BARIsarisa-7, BARIsarisa-9 and Tori-7 were undertaken to their yield performance. Results revealed that BARIsarisa-8 had the highest seed yield (1.91 t/ha) and this variety however, had no significant difference with Binasarisa-4 and MM-20. Tori-7 had shown the lowest seed yield (1.21 t/ha) but matured earliest (80 days) among the tested mutants/varieties. Considering days to maturity, BARIsarisa-9 may be introduced in the above cropping pattern because of its similar crop duration with 10% higher seed yield than Tori-7.

Objectives:

To evaluate the yield performance of newly released rapeseed and mustard varieties, and mutants with existing cultivars and to select the suitable one (s) for Rangpur region.

Methodology:

Experiments were conducted at farmers’ field of two Upazilla of Rangpur district viz., Rangpur sadar and Pirgasa during winter season of 1999-2000 and 2000-2001. Two advanced mutants viz., MM-19 and MM-20 and eight recently released varieties viz., Agrani, Safal, Binasarisa-3, Binasarisa-4, BARIsarisa-6, BARIsarisa-7, BARIsarisa-9 and Tori-7 were undertaken to their yield performance. Experimental design was randomized complete block design with three replicates. The unit plot size was 5m x 4 m. Seeds were sown after transplant Aman harvest. Seeds were sown in line, 30 cm apart at the rate of 9 kg/ha. Farmers management practices were followed. At harvest, data on yield components were taken from 10 randomly selected plants of each plot and seed yield was taken from the whole plot. The collected data were analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

Among 11 varieties/mutants, BARIsarisa-9 may be introduced in the cropping pattern of T. aman-mustard-Boro at the Rangpur region because of its similar crop duration with 10% higher seed yield than Tori-7.
