Performance of Four Deshi Jute Varieties/mutants in Rangpur Region Under Research and Farmers’ Management Practices

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Two experiments were conducted at the research farm and the farmers’ field with two advanced mutants CM-443 and CM-445 and three varieties viz., CVL-1, Atompat-38 and Binadeshipat-2 and two advanced deshi jute mutants viz., CM-443 and CM-445 were taken to evaluate growth and yield performance in the Rangpur region of Bangladesh under T. aman-potato-jute cropping pattern. Results revealed that Binadeshipat-2 showed the highest fibre yield and CVL-1 showed the lowest fibre yield among the five tested genotypes both at research and farmers’ field for existing cropping pattern at Rangpur region.

Objectives:

To evaluate the yield performance of deshi jute varieties/advanced mutants line under T. aman-potato-jute based cropping pattern at the northern region of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

Two experiments were conducted at the BINA research farm (high input with proper cultural management practices) and the farmers’ field (low input with farmer’s management practices) of Rangpur district during Kharif-I season of 1999. Three jute varieties viz., CVL-1, Atompat-38 and Binadeshipat-2 and two advanced deshi jute mutants viz., CM-443 and CM-445 were taken to evaluate the yield performance. The experimental design was RCB with 3 replicates. Unit plot size was 4m x 3m. Seeds were sown 30 cm apart with seed rate 8 kg/ha. Recommended fertilizers were applied during final land preparation. At harvest, plant parameters were taken from 10 randomly selected plants of each plot and fibre yield was taken from the whole plot. The collected data were analyzed statistically.
