Effects of Soil-cum-foliar Nitrogen Applicati on in a Rape Cv. Sonali Sarisha and a Mustard Cv. Shambal

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The effect of application of soil-cum-foliar nitrogen (N) was examined in a field trial in 1992-93. Treatments comprised 0, 50, 75 and 100 kg/ha of N applied to soil, and 0, 7 .5 10.0 and 15% urea solution in water sprayed on the crop foliage. SonaIi Sarisha having greater seeds/pod (47 %) and bolder seeds (31 %) produced 14.3% higher seed yield (1.20 t/ha) than that of Shambal (1.05 t/ha). Soil applied N progressively increased seed yield and the differences between successive rates were significant. An improvement in pods/m²and crop dry matter/m²was the major basis of seed yield increase. A marked increase in harvest index was apparent w ith 50 kg/ha of soil applied N compared to the control. Foliar application of urea significantly increased seed yield up to 10% of the spray and retarded thereafter. The increases were 0.15 and 0.40 t/ha higher, respectively at the 7 .5 and 10% of foliar spray compared to the control (0.90 t/ha). Again, the yield benefits were realized through the combination of improvement noted in pods/m² and crop dry matter/m². The interaction effects due to three factors were not significant.

Objectives:

To find the effect of application of soil-cum-foliar nitrogen (N) on of rapes (cv . Sonali Sarisha) and mustard (cv. Shambal).

Methodology:

The experiment having 32 treatment combinations was replicated three times within a randomized block design. There were three factors in the experiment as, A) Two varieties (Shambal and Sonali Sarisha), B) Soil N-rate - 4 no (0, 50, 75 and 100 kg N/ha) and C) 4 no (0, 7.5, 10 and 15% urea solution in water = 0, 14, 18.8 and 28 kg N/ha). The land was opened with a tractor drawn disc plough on 20 October 1992 and prepared in the later by using a combination of rotavator and country plough, and finally obtained a good tilth. The individual plots measured 1.4m x 7 .2m ( = 10m² ). Each plot received a general dose of TSP, MP, Gypsum and Zinc sulphate @ 160, 60, 80 and 5 kg/ha as preplanting basal application. Seeds were sown in 30 cm apart lines on 10 November 1992 @ 7 and 9 kg/ha of Shambal and Sonali Sarisha, respectively. Nitrogen as treatment was applied on 7 days after emergence . Only one spray was given for the foliar application of nitrogen on the 27 days of emergence.The crop was weeded two times and one irrigation was given at 25 days after emergence. Two insecticidal sprays were required with Zihiol 50 EC @ 454 ml/ha, one at pre-flowering and other at end flowering stages. Lodging occurred in all crops following a rainstorm during the first week of January coinciding with mid-flowering stage . At maturity,yield components were assessed from ten selected plants obtained from three measured quadrant areas of each plot. The whole plots were harvested to record seed yields on 9% moisture basis. Data were analyzed following the ANOVA-technique and means were adjudged with Duncun's Multiple Range Test.
