Adoption of Ipm Technology in Vegetables Cultivation in Selected Areas of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The present study for adopting IPM technologies over farmers' existing pest management practices was done in some specific areas under Comilla, Jessore and Lalmonirhat districts during 2002-03 Cabbage and eggplant were considered to bring under treatment of two residues like use of mustard oilcan poultry refuse. A total of 300 farmers were purposively selected with 100 from each of the districts. With the use of this new technology in the soil 15 days before translantation of vegetables seedlings, the mortality rates of cabbage seedlings (8-23%) and egg-plant Seedlings (16-20%) under farmers' practices were unusually higher than occurred in plots under experiment. But non-availability of poultry refuse, lack of quality seeds, high price of mustard oilcan, fertilizers insecticides and Inadequate knowledge of the recipients of improved technologies were discovered to be common constraints.

Objectives:

To use IPM technologies like use of poultry refuse and mustard oilcake in the vegetable fields to control soil borne diseases.

Methodology:

The study was conducted during winter and summer season of 2001-03. The study for adopting IPM technologies over farmers' existing pest management practices was done in some specific areas under Camilla, Jessore and Lalmonirhat districts during 2002-03. Cabbage and eggplant were considered to bring under treatment of two residues like use of mustard oilcan and poultry refuse. A total of 300 farmers were purposively selected with 100 from each of the districts. They were related to the use of technologies, farmers' perceptions and constraints recorded on a regular basis by locally set enumerators. Necessary information was collected through the use of interview schedules. Some secondary information was also used in the present study from the IPM-CRSP office, Statistical Yearbook and different publications. Major insects in vegetables were leaf-eating caterpillars, aphids, fruit fly, ants, parasites, leaf hooper, fruit and shoot borer and white ants. The major diseases were blight, mosaic, wilt, foot rot, stem rot and leaf spot. Every farmer considered eggplant fruit and shoot borer ( EFSB ) as the most common and harmful insect pest. Other notable pests were red spider mites ( Tetranychus sp), whitefly (Bemisia tabaci ), and epilachna beetle (Epilachna spp).

Achievement/Findings:

Poultry refuse plot performed relatively better than mustard oilcake plot in terms of input cost. The constraints of improved technologies related to cabbage and eggplant were ranked based on their priority. The first ranked problem was non- availability of poultry in required quantity in the areas followed by lack of quality seeds, high price of mustard oilcake and fertilizers.
