Moisture Density Test for the Construction of Soil Cement Tiles for Lining Irrigation Canals

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A Laboratory experiment was conducted to evaluate a suitahle test for the determination of optimum moisture content and maximum density of cement treated soil mixes in order to construct soil-cement canal tiles using BREPAK ( Developed by building Research Establishment. U. K. ) block making press. A speciallY constructed mould testing machine and different types of soil were used for this purpuse. The test resuls thus obtained were compared with those found by 2.5 Kg and 4.5 K g stendard laboratory rammer methods. The investigation Indicates that 4.5 Kg rammer method may be used for moisture-density test for the construction of soil-cement tiles and routine moisture-density test could also be avoided if proper drainage facilities are created with the mould of tile construction machine.

Objectives:

The present study programme was undertaken whether any of the available standard laboratory methods could be applied for use with stabilized soils in soil-cement canal tiles.

Methodology:

Three different types of soil (clay loam, sandy loam, and silt loam) were collected for this study and processed In the laboratory in accordance wit h the BS 1377:1975. and BS 1924:1975. Some Important physical and chemical properties of the soils are given . Highly plastic sols are unsuitable for cement stabilization. Generally soil suitable for cement stabilize tionn must have a liquid limit less than 50 per cent end plasticity index less than 30 per cent . The presence of excess organic matters and sulphate& in soils is vary detrimental to soil-cement reaction. Organic matter content 2 per cent and sulphate contents between 0.5 per cent and 1.0 per cent are said to represent the upper limit for cement treated soil mixtures . It appears from that soil proparties closely con form to above standard criteria except the organic content of sandy loam soil. However, the soils for this study were not selected merely on the basis of suitability according to the criteria •et for the design of road pavements and rural houses, rather the soils were sel ected randomly with a view to assess ing the moisture density test suitable for soil-cement tile construction. The moisture density relationship are to be det ermined using thedesired soil stabilizer combination and the method and deg• ree of compaction which will be actu• ally used in practice. For this purpose, a special mould was constructed. The into rnal dimension of the mould were; length 100 mm, width 50 mm and height 50mm.Besides,other necessary accessoriss like upper and lower plugs with displacing bars and ejecting plun ger have also been constructed.
