Carcass Weight and Gut Contents of Bull Calves Fed Urea Treated Rice Straw and Fish Meal

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The dressed carcass weight (% LW) of ammoniated rice straw fed bull calves was significantly lower (P< 0.01lthan fish meal supplemented (at the rate of 0, 50, 100, 150, 200 and 250 g per calf per day) ammoniated rice straw. There was no significant difference in dressing percentage of calves beyond the 25 g of fish meal level. There was no significant difference in gut contents among the groups fed either with or without different levels of fish meal with basal diet. The reticulo-ruminal contents of gastro-intestinal tract was found to be 18.4 to 25% of the liveweight.

Objectives:

To find out the effect of supplementing ammoniated rice straw with fish meal on the gastro-intestinal content and dressed carcass weight of native cattle.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted for 120 days with local bull calves approximately more than one year of age and similar live weight. The experimental animals were divided in two groups of A and B. Experiment A involved six treatments with six bull calves and Experiment B involved five treatments with five bull calves. These groups were randomly placed on different levels of fish meal with ammoniated rice straw through urea. Ammoniated rice straw with urea was fed ad libitum. Fish meal was supplied at the rate of 0, 50, 100, 150, 200 and 250 g per day in Experiment A and 0, 15, 25, 50 and 150 g per calf per day in Experiment B. The animals of two groups were fed treated straw together and the fish meal individually every morning. The straw was ammoniated with 5% urea. Sodium sulphate (0.35% of the straw) was added to the urea solution before spraying it over the straw. The ratio of straw to water was 1:1 . Weekly feed intake and live weight changes were recorded. The calves were slaughtered in the morning before giving any food for a period of three days in each experiment . The gastro-intestinal tract from oesophagus to rectum was removed from the slaughtered calves with contents and ligated to divide the whole gut into five sections: (a) oesophagus, rumen, reticulum (b) omasum (c) abomasum (small intestine) and (e) large intestine. The weight of the empty gut tissue and its contents were recorded. The weight of the head, skin, thoracies, abdominal and pelicavity contents as well as the trotter, legs under the hock and knee joints were not considered while estimating the warm carcass weight of each calf.

It may be concluded that considerable changes in dressed carcass weight and gut contents in the gastro-intestinal tract of ruminants occurred following changes in diet.
