Pre-planting Cold Treatment Effects on the Growth and Development of Garlic (allium Sativum L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Garlic cloves treated at 30C showed earlier and higher percentage of emergence,whereas, treated at OOC failed to emerge. Plant height, leaf area index ( LAI )total drY weight,leaf dry weight end pseudoatem ( including bulb) dry weight were highet in vernalized crop but root/ahoot ratio were lower. Cold treatment prior to planting had a promotive effect on bulb diameter, bulb weight and yield. Key words: Garlic, Vernalization, Dry weight, Yield,LAI.

Objectives:

To investigate the effects of pre-planting chilling treatments of garlic cloves on the growth, development and yield of the crop.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Field Laboratory of the Department of Crop Botany, Bangladessh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during the winter season of 1988-89. The experi- 114 mental site located at 2404'N latitude and 9011 2' E longitude was consisted of sandy loam soil. The treatments were at ooc, 3uc and room temperature (15-250C) for 10 days. The cloves after being imbibed for 24 hours were treated at desired tern. peratures in a Biological series Thermos tat model No. 108600, KARL KOLB FRNKFURT/M, GERMANY. The experiment was laid out in ran domized complete block design with three replications. Each plot size was 4mx5m. The cloves were planted in rows with a spacing of 20cmx10 em on 15 November 1988. With the usual cultural practices, cowdung and triple super-phosphate were applied at the rate of 10 t/ha and 148 kg/ha, respectively, at the time of final land preparation. Urea and muriate of potash were used as top dressing in two equal installments, at 25 and 45 days after planting (DAP) at the rate of 173 and 148 kg/ha, respectively. Weed• ing, irrigation and application of fungi cide were done as and when required. Crop sampling covering 1m2 of each plct was carried out at 14 days interval, starting from 28 DAP until final harvest. Vernalized and control crops were har vested on 112 DAP (7th March, 1989) and 126 DAP (21st March,1989) respectively. Standard growth analysis was undertaken according to Hunt .
