Effect of Cement Mixing on Soil Infiltration

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at the Asian Institute of Technology. Bangkok, on heavy textured clay soil, popularly known as 'Bangkok clay' adding small amount of portland cement to improve its infiltration rate. The results revealed that the addition of cement increased the infiltration capacity by changing the grain size distribution of the soil.

Objectives:

To investigate the effect of addition of small amount of portland cement at different proportions on the rate of infiltration of the soil.

Methodology:

The infiltration test was carried out at the Agricultural Experimental Station of the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT). Bangkok. The soil of AIT, generally termed as 'Banukok clay', consisted of heavy textured clays, called acid sulphate low and soil. These are formed from brackish water of very fine grained materials with low lime contents. According to Anonnymus these soils are very slowly permeable and poorly drained. The field instrumentation included the preparation of land and driving the .cylinders in the field. The soil in the field was pulverized uniformly up to the plough depth. Cylinders. 2 mm of rolled steel. each measuring 30 cm deep and 25 cm in diameter were installed to about 15 cm deep in the soil. Normal portland cement at different rates of 0.3%, 0.4% and 0.5% by weight was mixed with the soil. For each set of treatment six cylinders, three for cement mixed soil and three for untreated soil, were installed in the field. After installing the cylinders known amounts of cement were mixed uniformly with the soiI and were left for moist curing. After 28 days of curing, infiltration was measured in each of the cylinders.

Achievement/Findings:

In this study very little amount of cement was mixed with the soil and therefore the changes in infiltration rates were not well marked. The rate of application of 0.4% corresponds to a field application rate of about 2 tons/acre incorporated in the top 7.5cm 01 the soil. Further studies are sugge.sted to investigate for a wide range of cement mixing and for a long duration of moist curing. However, the results obtained are fairly encouraging, particularly in improving the poorly drained clayey soils. Based on the known properties of soil, cement and their interactions a field experiment was carried out at the Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok to investigate the effect of addition of small amount of portland cement at different proportions on the rate of infiltration of the soil.
