Farmers' Awareness Regarding Issues Affecting Farming Environment

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The purpose of the study was to measure the awareness of farmers regarding their farming environment and to identify the reasons responsible for its degradation and also to explore relationships between some of the selected variables. For collection of data. 100 randomly selected farmers from a population of 390. were interviewed personally during January 1995. Majority (55%) of the farmers had medium to high awareness while 45% had low awareness about their farm environment. Among the reasons. improper use of agro-chemicals. inadequate use of organic fertilizers. poor management practices along with rice dominated cropping pattern causes degradation of farm environment. The level of education, farming experience and communication exposure of the farmers were found to be related with awareness on farm environment while the other characteristics were independent to each other.

Objectives:

(i) To measure the extent of awareness and understanding of the farmers regarding important phenomena of farm environment,

(ii) To identify the reasons causing degradation of farm environment directly or indirectly,

(iii) To determine and describe some of the selected characteristics of the farmers.

Methodology:

Char Issardia village was selected purposively as the locale of the study. One hundred farmers from different socio-economic status were randomly selected from the total population of 390. A data collection instrument-questionnaire was used to collect data from the farmers. Face to face and personal interview method was employed to collect information. The questionnaire was pretested and modified on the basis of pretesting results before final collection of data. The data collection took 30 days from 1st January 1995. Data were compiled, tabulated and analyzed for interpretation of findings. The statistical measure such as mean, percentage, range, standard deviation, and coefficient of correlation test were used to interpret the information. Five percent level of probability was used to measure the level of significance. The awareness of the farmers was the dependent variable and age, level of education, farm size, family size, farming experience, farming facilities, innovativeness were the independent variables of the study. In case of age, level of education, family size, farm size, farming experiences, quantitative data were available from the respondents. But qualitative data were gathered in case of farming facilities, innovativeness, organizational participation and communication exposure of the independent variables to quantify them. In measuring the dependent variable, farmers were asked 14 questions on various dimensions related to farm environment and their reply were sought on 'very much aware', 'aware' and 'somewhat aware' and they were assigned 3, 2 and 1 score, respectively. Adding the scores of 14 questions, awareness on farm environment of an individual farmer was measured.

On the basis of above findings it may be concluded that majority of the farmers of the study area are not yet properly aware of degradation of their farming environment as a result of using existing crop production practices. Hence, appropriate steps should be taken by the concerned authority to make farmers aware to keep their farm environment safe and friendly for the survival of future generations.
