Field Performance of a Tractor Mounted Boom Sprayer

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Field performance of a tractor mounted sprayer was carried out to know the effect of swath, nozzle height and nozzle position on spray-deposit. Pattens of spray deposit was studied under different wind speed conditions. The spray deposit and drift were measured by fluorometric method. The deposit was recorded at different stages of wheat plants. The spray drift in a wind tunnel was also measured under different wind speed conditions.

Objectives:

Application rate, spray-deposits on the plant and effect of plant growth on spray deposit were investigated in this study.

Methodology:

A tank having capacity of 2000 liter was used to supply spray-solution. A manually operated agitator was used to stir the spray-solution. A centrifugal pump ( type kreisel, q=6.61/min ) was used to supply spray-solution from tank to the spray boom. The maximum length of the boom was 12 m and it could be adjusted to a minimum length of 4m. Brass hydraulic nozzles 10002 was used in the boom. The ground velocity of of the tractor was monitored from the tractor's speed-meter and was recorded from the distance traveled and time required to travel that distance. The through put of the nozzle was calibrated by using a graduated cylinder. A digital stop-watch was employed to record the time. Height of the boom ( nozzles ) was maintained through the tractor's hydraulic circuit system and the height was measured by an ordinary meter scale.

Achievement/Findings:

(i) The spray deposit can be maximized and minimized, respectively, by using appropriate type of nozzle, adjusting spray height, equipment speed and orientation of nozzle and spraying in a favorable meteorological condition. (ii) Proper dosage of active ingredients should be used for obtaining efficient biological effectivity . (iii) Appropriate size of tractor mounted boom sprayer should be used in Bangladesh Agriculture for protecting crops from pest attack and to reduce application cost and for timely application. (iv) Research should be directed to improve the application technique for increasing target deposit to develop spryer in the country by using local materials for making the sprayer economic to farmers
