Effect of Green Manuring on Rice Yield and Soil Properties

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This paper reports a study conducted in North Bangladesh Tubewell Project (NBTP), Thakurgaon. An approach to introduce the use of green manure, improved highly the physical properties of soils and increased crop yield. Green manure also saves more than 50% of the amount of nitrogen fertilizer over without use of green manure. Farmers' existing cropping patterns were analyzed for costs and returns and the highest net return of Tk. 29914/ha was obtained from the pattern of Fallow- Purbachi-BR 11.

Objectives:

To evaluate the effect of green manure crop on soil properties and the yield of transplanted Aman rice
To analyze the farmers existing cropping patterns to identify the most profitable one.

Methodology:

The field experiment was conducted in the service areas of deep tubewell (number 89 and 126) during 1983 to 1989. Potential of a Green Manure Crop: A green manure crop (Sesbania rostrata) locally called "Dhaincha" was grown in Aus season (April-June), in between the Rabi wheat and the T. Aman rice crops in the service area of deep tubewells #89 and # 126 and to enrich soil fertility and, therefore, there was less chemical fertilizer demand in the subsequent seasons. To find out the difference in yield and fertilizer requirement of green manure and without green manure plots, 50% area of the selected plots were used for growing _Sesbania _rostrataand the rest 50% area remained as fallow. The Sesbania rostrata plants were incorporated into the soil when they were 45 to 55-day old. The change in physical properties of soil before and after green manuring was recorded. Cropping Patterns and Income: An economic analysis of existing cropping patterns of the farmers were done to identify the most profitable one and income derived from those. Cost and return data were collected from 7 farmers in each deep tubewell area. Cost items consisted of labour, draft power. seed, manure, chemical fertilizers, insecticides, and irrigation water. Grain yield and straw values were considered in the return calculations.

Achievement/Findings:

The highest net return of Tk. 29914 was obtained from the pattern Fallow-Purbachi- BR11 and the second highest was Tk. 28564 from the pattern Fallow-Purbachi-BR1O. The pattern with green manure improved highly the physical properties of soils and gave a net return of Tk. 22105. The lowest net return of Tk. 8181 was obtained from the pattern Fallow-Millet-HYV40. . Green manure also saves more than 50% of the amount of nitrogen fertilizer over without use of green manure
