A field experiment was conducted to study the effects of organic farming on soil nutrients and quality of carrot. The treatments were T1 (composted cowdung), T2 (poultry manure), T3 (rice straw compost), T4 (recommended fertilizer) and T5 (composted cowdung+ poultry manure+ rice straw compost). Recommended fertilizer dose for the experimental soil was N90P25K30S20. The N, P, K and S were applied from urea, TSP, MP and gypsum. Well decomposed cowdung @ 30 t/ha in wet basis, poultry manure @ 25 t/ha in wet basis and rice straw compost @ 30 t/ha in wet basis were incorporated in the plots as per treatments at 3 days before seed sowing and after two days they were mixed thoroughly with soil. The plots were arranged in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with 5 treatments and 3 replications. There was a beneficial effect of application of organic manures on plant moisture, dry matter and nutrient content in root. The influence of different treatments was observed on moisture, dry matter, N, P, K, S, Na and Ca content in edible portion (root). All the nutrients that analyzed were differed statistically by organic treatments compared with T4 (recommended fertilizer). The findings of the experiment indicated that the best quality of carrot could be obtained from organic farming. The better quality of carrot is possible by using poultry manure and composted cowdung+ poultry manure+ rice straw compost rather than other single application of cowdung or fertilizer. Among the treatments poultry manure and composted cowdung + poultry manure + rice straw compost were superior for enrichment in nutritional quality of carrot.

To examine of some organic farming on the changes in chemical composition of carrot due to the effects of organic farming and compare between conventional and organic farming system.

The experiment was conducted at the Environmental Science Field Laboratory of BAU, Mymensingh during Rabi season of 2004-2005. The land of experimental field was medium high, belonging to the Agro- ecological Zone (AEZ-9)-Old Brahmputra Floodplain. The treatments were T1 (composted cowdung), T2 (poultry manure), T3 (rice straw compost), T4 (recommended fertilizer) and T5 (composted cowdung+ poultry manure+ rice straw compost).Three types of organic manure such as composted cowdung (CD), poultry manure (PM), rice straw compost (RS) and recommended fertilizer (CR) were selected and collected from BAU farm. Nitrogen (N) @ 90 kg ha-1 from urea, phosphorus (P) @ 25 kg ha-1 from triple super phosphate (TSP), potassium (K) @ 30 kg ha-1 from muriate of potash (MP), sulphur (S) @ 20 kg ha-1 from ZnS04 were applied in the treatment (T4) plot. The total amount of TSP, one third of urea and one third of MP were applied to the plots during final land preparation. The remainder of the urea and MP were top dressed in two equal installments at 30 and 60 days after sowing the seeds. Well decomposed cowdung, poultry manure and rice straw compost (wet basis) were incorporated in the plots as per treatments at 3 days before sowing and after two days they were mixed thoroughly with the soil. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design where the experimental area was divided into 3 blocks representing the replications to reduce soil heterogenetic effects. The total numbers of unit plots were 15. The unit plot size was 2m x 2m and plots were separated from each other by drains (50 cm). Treatments were randomly distributed within the blocks. The seeds of carrot (Daucus carota) cv. New Kuroda, a Japanese variety were used in the experiment. Carrot New Kuroda is an improved variety, deep orange red color and it is a popular variety. The seeds were sown on 6th December 2004. Before sowing seeds were soaked in water for 24 hours. For sowing small (1 inch deep) holes were made at requisite distance and 3 seeds were placed in each hole which was then filled with soil. Three seeds per hole were planted in order to ensure uniform stand of the crops. Row to row distance was 20 cm and plant to plant distance was 15 cm. Immediately after sowing the seeds watering was done twice a day for ensuring uniform germination. First weeding was done 15 days after sowing and first thinning was done 21 days after sowing. After thinning there is one seedling per hill was retained. The growing points of the seedlings to be removed were pinched off. Uprooting was not done since there were possibilities of injuring the adjacent seedlings that were left behind. Earthing up was done twice during the growing period. Harvesting was done in two times. At full maturity, the crop was harvested on 28th February and 8th March. Harvesting was done by uprooting the whole plants. The soil adhering to the roots could be easily thrown away by jerking. We.ght of the sample plants (only root part) were taken from each unit plot immediately after harvesting. To evaluate the effect of organic farming on quality of carrot 15 plants were selected. The harvested plants were tagged separately. Plant samples were cut and firstly at sun dried and finally at oven dried and digested in diacid mixture of HNO3 and HCIO4 (2: 1). The digested samples were analysis of N, P, K, S, Na and Ca following the standard method and N estimated by the Micro Kjeldhal method.
