Intercropping of Maize with Three Varieties of Groundnut at Two Levels of Plant Population

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at Hathazari during December-May 1984-85 and 1985-86 to evaluate the productivity of maize with groundnut. Maize ( var. Sadaf ) was grown with three varieties of groundnut (DA-1, DM-1 and DG-2 ) at two levels of plant popuIation (16,6666 and 11,1111 plant/ha).Highest equivalent yield of maize (6.76 t/ha) and net income (Taka 24,555/ha) was obtained from a combination of 44,444 maize + 16,6666 groundnut (var. DG-2) population. This combination also gave the highest LER (1.29). The results suggest that maize and groundnut variety DG-2 can be intercropped maintaining 90cm X 25cm spacing for maize and 30cm X 13cm for groundnut,

Objectives:

Different plant population level and variety was undertaken for its economic evaluation.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Institute, Hathazari, Chittagong during the months of November to May in 1984- 85 and 1985-86. The soil of the experimental site was silt y clay having pH value of 6.4. Ten treatments were evaluated of which six were intercrop treatments besides a sole maize and three sole groundnut crops. It was conducted in a randomized black design with three replication. Four levels of plant population and 3 varieties of groundnut ( DA-1, DM-1 and DG-2) of different morphological make up were used. Each unit plot size was 5mx3.6m. Sole crop of maize was seeded at 90cm row distances of 25cm. The sole crop of groundnut was seeded at 30cm row distances for variety DA-1 and DG-2 and 25cm for variety DM-1, so that each plot of groundnut had 12 rows for varieties DA-1 & DG-2 and 14 rows for DM-1. The intarcropped plot had 4 rows of maize & 8 rows of groundnut. The maize varietv Sadaf was used. The experimental area received fertilizers at t he rate of 20 kg N, 60 kg P 20 6 and 40 kg K20 per ha at the time of sowing An additional 100kg N/ha for maize was given by top dressing close to the maize rows, equally at 21 and 42 days after sowing.

Achievement/Findings:

The results of the experiment suggest that maize (variety Sadaf) and groundnut ( variety DG-2 ) can be intercropod on the same land at a population level of 44,444 maize and 16,6666 groundnut p!ants/ha maintaining 90 cm X 25 cm spacing for maize and 30 cm X 13 cm for ground nut and applying fertilizers at the rate of 120-60-40 N P205 K2 kg/ha .
